I would suggest going to a hobby supply store. Not hobby lobby or other stores like it. Go to a store specializing in model airplanes/boats/cars. They would have everything to make something like this. RadioShack has a lot of electric motors and other things.

try a small dc motor maybe from radio shack
they are about 1/2 inch round and go from there

why not buy a little, simple remote control car and do some surgery on it? You'd have your gears and controls in a cheap package.
