recently my wife (who is an immigrant) and i went to eat and drink at a hard rock cafe.
upon ordering our alcoholic drinks and presenting our id, the bar tender stated that my wife's greencard is not an acceptable form of id.
of course after some bickering a littlre, we left.
i looked up the state alcohol sales rules and regs and it clearly states that a greencard is an acceptable form of id for alcohol sales.
i emailed the manager and i got a response back stating that they are aware of the rules but they have chosen not to accept greencards at that establishment as a valid form of id.
the manager went on to say that they accept passports, state issued id, and drivers license.
i asked specifically why they do not accept greencards and no response is given, the manager just ignores the question or gives the response "we just don't accept them".
think this is bias against immigrants?

a greencard does have a photo id and many anti-couiterfeiting and forging properties.
i am just amazed how they will accept an id issued by a foreign government but will not accept an id from our own government.
we have both drank there before with no problems and many other places like that throughout the world.
the manager should no that in order to get a state issued id or drivers license that my wife has to show her greencard, so it seems kind of redundant to me.
so am i suppose to take very damn id i have any time i go somewhere now?

They have the right to accept any forms of ID they want.
I was once on "leave" from the military in a small town in Pennsylvania, and presented my U.S. MILITARY ID card as identification and they refused to serve me alcohol. They were not familiar with it, had never seen one, and wanted to see a drivers license instead. I argued the point, saying it's more official than a drivers license...
Bottom line I had to show my drivers license if I wanted a beer...and I did...OH WELL!!! I certainly didn't take it as "bias against the military".
I agree with the first poster. It's exactly why I felt about the way I was treated...because it could have been fake..
It was most probably the fact that they want to protect their liquor license....
EDIT
For those that don't know...a U.S. Military ID card IS issued by the Federal Government and HAS a picture of the military member on it.
It has nothing to do with who issues the ID. It has nothing to do if it has a picture on it either.
It has to do with whether the merchant accepts that form of ID or not. Period.

I think this is a problem a lot of businesses face. At walmart (i worked there) they told us not to accept green cards as a way of identification. We could only accept military id cards, passports, drivers license, or state issued id.
I ran into this situation and I took the green card as id, even though I was clearly instructed not to. I could have gotten in huge trouble if the person who used this form of id took it to my manager and said i let them buy alcohol.
I wouldn't say this person was biased, but it might be a corporate thing that they really cant control. If corporate says they can't accept green cards, then well they cant no matter how ridiculous it is. So, I wouldn't think of the restaraunt itself as bias, but maybe the company had other reasons for enforcing this law (they might have had problems with this sort of thing before).
I am engaged to a man from germany and we have run across this sort of thing quite a bit. Just stay positive, most people aren't bias against immigrants, and if they are then they are stupid!
Have a nice day!

No, I know it isn't. I've been on ID check where they weren't accepted. That and a couple of other types of ID's. It's at the discretion of management to decide that. The only thing not at their discretion is to actually accept ID that does not meet the requirements in that state. I can't imagine why you would consider that a bias against immigrants or spend this much time on dealing with it at all unless you are looking for a lawsuit, in which case, will not be a valid reason.

Honestly, I don't know. I was once in Florida (I live in PA), and got carded. My license was a new one, with a new design, that was not in their "guide book" yet. I was accused of using a fake ID (it was valid, and I was 27!), and escorted out by security. I spoke with their manager the next day, and they said that it was their policy. I think that sometimes they have policies more stringent than state codes because they want to make sure to protect their liquor licenses... it probably had more to do with that than her being an immigrant.

It is because a lot of underage people use fake green cards as a form of ID to buy alcohol and it is impossible to check if it is authentic with machines, so they don't accept them.
We don't accept them at my work either.
By the way, you are obviously a racist and discriminate against the working class

I to have used federally issued U.S. government military ID cards all over the world, and, no, they are NOT accepted everywhere.
It is the establishment's discretion as to what type of ID they accept.
It does sound as it someone is determined to make this a "racial or bias" issue.
IT'S NOT!!

I agree recently i had trouble getting my sons passport cuz my hubby had to sighn the papers and show id. Well his id is a international drivers license. He is a immagrant also. The us gave him that for his id. Well we had trouble doing that but eventually they gave in another incident is when me and my hubby went to a casino they would not allow him in cuz it was not a proper id but the funny thing is they did not even ask for mine only his. I raised hell cuz its messed up how people treat you if your different but people get what they deserve in the end.

they probably have had a lot of problems with fake greencards.
its their right to not accept them as a form of id.
did you ask if they had a major problem with seeing a lot of fakes? or did you just get all uppity and argumentative and assume racism or discrimination.
they also dont owe you an explanation as to what rules they choose to implement in their establishment.
your wife couldnt just show her drivers licence or something?
EDIT : Your statement about "all" of us assuming your wife is mexican is not only wrong, but shows that the true racist here is YOU. It never occurred to me that she was Mexican, but simply that she had a Green Card.

I think the picture issue is valid. If there isn't a picture associated with it, I wouldn't accept it either.
I dont think it has anything to do with discrimination. I think it has everything to do with being ultra conservative and duly cautious to not serve someone underaged, and to preserve the legality of their liquor license.
Look at it from a BUSINESS perspective, not from a "oh my, I'm being discriminated against" perspective.

I don't think greencards have a picture, therefore, they are unacceptable as ID for the purchase of alcoholic beverages.
