What is the meaning of the quarter of a dollar that is put on baptism or christening mementos/recordatories?

I just got some Spanish recordatories and they have a space to put a quarter of a dollar on them. I don't know the reason for that tradition, or its origin. I have been asking and people just do it without knowing why.

it must be a catholic thing they are always figuring out a way to get money into the mix.

never heard of it. Some people may be donating to the kid's education or life fund. It is usually tradition to present money to kids.

it's not a catholic thing. it could be a mexican tradition though.
