If I upgrade my windows to Vista from 2000, will the Trojan virus that is on my computer still be there or will it also be deleted with all the other files? And will it be on the files that I backup? Thanks!

Yes, my computer can handle Vista and it can be upgraded from Windows 2000. How do I reformat? And yes, I do realize that it will delete out all my files.

No, it will be deleted. Formatting will destroy any viruses (and you WILL be formatting, as Vista doesn't support upgrading directly from 2000).
2000 to Vista? Wow! Most people can't figure out XP to Vista.

No the upgrade will not delete the Trojan on your computer. The upgrade path would be XP next. I don't believe you can go from 2000 to Vista direct. If you reformat your hard drive when you do the upgrade then it will get rid of every thing. Note the Trojan may not be as effective against XP or Vista.

if you are only upgrading from 2000 to vista all the files including ur friend the trojan wil stay there. If you install Vista from a clean installation then everything will be deleted!
If you backed up some files i would recomend you to scan for trojans..
my advice is to install Vista and deleted the old operating system dont upgrade make a new installation
Start Fresh!

It would be best to try and remove that virus before upgrading to vista.
If you are doing a complete backup, then yes, it will transfer to Vista too.
If you do a format, then no, it will be wiped, and so will all your other files/important documents. So you should really remove the virus, then backup your info.
Thanks for the geek comment too :D
edit: Are you sure your computer can even handle Vista? If it is compatible with Windows 2000, it likely will run Vista very poorly, that is, if you are getting premium edition.

Upgrading an infected machine is a no no, you may end up with one that doesnt even work as the upgrade process may halt half way through.
Whats more, if your PC is Windows 2000, the age of the OS indicate that this is a old machine, putting Vista on (if it can even take Vista) is just going to end up with a machine slower than an infected 2000 PC.
Best advice is to clean it out of virus rather than upgrade.

That depends how you install Vista.
If you just install Vista over 2000, then yes it will still be there. If you use boot your Vista disc and have it format the drive then install Vista then the virus won't be there and neither will anything else.
As for the files you backup, possibly. depends if it's programmed to spread.

You dont know where the trojan is hiding.. so its possible that re-installing only Windows will fix your problem. If spyware and antivirus software cant remove it, then format your drive, then install Vista.
Just make use wen ur backing up files, to not put anything suspicious :)

If you do a complete re-format of the hard drive then it should be gone. Some high tech viruses also require a CMOS reset by using the jumper switch on the motherboard. But, I don't know of many Trojan programs that require that.

Yes, unless you format your drive. It also has a good change of infecting files you back up if its a virus - thats what viruses do!
