If I understand correctly, you are in an office building, and there is a unisex restroom in your area, but a female co-worker says it is for women only? Unless it is clearly marked with a plaque of a woman figure, you can use it. She may just prefer women to use it, because she may think a man will make a mess. Use it, clean up after yourself, and go on with your business...

Well, it seems this is how this group of people have worked things out. I think it would be rude and upsetting to the women to use the restroom that they are not used to sharing with men.

I have been in this situation and usually newcomers understood and adjusted quickly. One young man did not and insisted on using what was considered the "Ladies Room" The men thought he showed a lack of respect for his co-workers and the women simply did not like him.

It is a petty situation, but why not just go along with what everyone else does and not make needless stress and problems with your co-workers?

If the restroom is for a single person, with a lock on the door, and there is no sign outside to indicate it is for a specific gender, then it can be used by both. She is just strange.

Ask your boss, but it sounds ridiculous for you to have to leave the room and use another restroom. The last office I worked in had 2 restrooms, 1 on each floor, and we used whichever one we were closest to when the urge hit.

If there isn't a sign and one person can go in at a time and lock the door I don't see it being any problem. I mean is she upset cuz you left the toilet seat up?

If anyone gives you trouble say "hey this is a single stall bathroom with a lock. There's no sign on the outside and that means that it's unisex. I'm sorry if you have a personal problem with us sharing a bathroom, but unless I've offended you in some way I would like to continue using this general bathroom."

If anyone gives you trouble after that go to staples and buy a unisex bathroom sign. Sneek in early in the morning and nail it on the door, then you've made it official.

well if there are no signs designating the restroom for a certain sex then you should be able to use it just like everyone else. Sounds to me like they are being feminist towards you being the only man in this office. I would just use it whether or not next time and piss them off. I know this is not the way to solve anything but I mean that is ridiculous.

WHAT?

IMO if the restroom is a "one person" restroom (i.e. has a lock on it) then any gender can use it.

Is there a sign for men or women? Or does it just have "restroom"?

sounds like they just don't like you using the restroom that they consider "theirs". i don't think you need their permission...use the restroom if you want to, and yes, clean up after yourself so they have no reason to complain about you...and ignore those bossy women!
