in high school, I had to take Spanish. And then again in college, which I can understand more than high school, but this is America. And unless we are going to be communicating with people in South America or in Mexico, I don't see the point. It should be optional. And my option is that I would rather learn Italian.

I like how you think. I can't see why we would need to learn Spanish either. I won't learn Spanish and even refuse to learn the few Spanish words I've heard. It's the U.S. English is our language.

I agree with the first and third answers. It very much depends on the person and how good he's at languages. Regarding whether English is one of the hardest languages, I have to disagree. There are far more difficult languages than English or Spanish which use a different alphabet or symbols, which use other features of speech such as tones, and whose grammar is so different from English, French, Spanish or many others.

There's something else we can do to have English as the language we all use. Make rap and hip hop vocalists at least take English as a second language classes. Everybody forgets that for most of our history as a nation of laws people learned English no matter where they came from. Now you can't ask people to do that as it infringes on their rights. How? they came to this country as millions have before , but now We have to learn Spanish in the Southwest because the recent immigrants are not willing to do what every other group did willingly as a way to fully participate in this Country.

I just think that you should say anyone should have to learn English and not just say Spanish. I go to many places where there is some kind of Chinese or what ever they speak and they do it while you are at there places (nails place) and they could careless they are all yucking and laughing and we all put up with that. That is rude too so be fair. So be fair and go across to all languishes or whom ever is here should learn the English languish

The government doesn't make anyone learn any language. Schools can set their own curriculum, and they are free to teach what they feel will be most beneficial to their students. If you don't want to learn what the school teaches you, you don't have to, but then don't complain when you can't get a good job later on.

The government doesn't force anyone to learn Spanish. Most schools require their students to take a foreign language, but that is decided by the school, not the government.

Learning a foreign language, any foreign language, will benefit a person in any profession and, because of globalization, it is becoming increasingly important.

Part of the reason high schools require students learn a foreign language is to better prepare them for college.

You may not see the point in learning another language, but the same argument could be made against learning chemistry, history, etc. if a student does not plan on becoming a chemist, historian, etc.

I think 'everyone' should learn a second language. It helps people understand other cultures. A thing very needed in the US. Any language will do. Spanish is used in more places than just Mexico and South America (one of the reasons its called "Spanish"). Its used in Asia and Europe

If we had immigrations laws that allowed for legal immigration of poor people south of the border we could require that they learn English. However, because they are illegal we have no way to make them learn English. Also, I took French in high school.
