They are incarcerated in state prison.
They are usually taken out of the general population of prisoners for their own safety.

Sex offenders do not go to a federal prison!!!
If a person is convincted by the state, he goes to a state prison.
There is no special/certain state prison for sex offenders. Sex offenders are found in every single state prison in CA and every single yard. And they don't always go into protectice custody. It all depends. Some keep to themselves and others don't. How well they play with others depends on their type of custody- protective, ad seg, etc.

If it's a federal crime, then a federal prison. In the United States, a federal crime or federal offense is a crime that is either made illegal by U.S. federal legislation or a crime that occurs on U.S. federal property.

Mail fraud which crosses state lines or involves the (national) US Postal Service counts as a federal offense.

The FBI has been granted powers to investigate federal offenses.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is a Federal law enforcement agency subdivision of the United States Department of Justice, and is responsible for the administration of the federal prison system.

Normal every day prisons. The difference being that they take different rehab courses than other prisoners. In the military, sex offenders most often go to the prison at Miramar. They have a top rated Sex Offender Treatment program. The Sex Offender Registration Coordinator has to inform the State and local governments of the impending release of a Sex Offender with in 10 days of their release. (in the state, and County where the Sex Offender will be living)

It differs from state to state and county to county, but most states require that the Sex Offender see the local registering official within 72 hours of their release from prison. About half of all states have continuing treatment programs that Sex Offenders must participate in. Also if a Sex Offender was found guilty of a Federal Sexual Offense, they usually are released under MSR (mandatory supervised release) and can not live within 1000 feet of a school or day care facility.

They go to the same prisons as anybody else you commits a crime. They could go to a federal prison depending on the severity of their crimes and number of crimes they were charged with.
Sex offenders never change so it's a total waste of good prison cells if you ask me. We should just kill them all!

Same kind of prison as everybody else. Right alongside the parole violators and murderers. However, they don't take too kindly to child molesters so they will get what they deserve from other inmates.

I worked in an all male "medium" security prison in Ohio, & the inmate population was well sprinkled with "sex offenders" murderers, parole violators, etc.

Federal.

It's very hard for sex offenders in prisons because all the other inmates will just give them very hard time.

But they deserve it!!!
