why don't teachers/professors tell students what they do in their free time?

Most professors won't disclose what they do outside of the classroom simply because they are not your friends, but rather your mentors. They have a professional and ethical obligation to teach you - not to party with you! When professors, or anyone in an authoritative role, begins to self-disclose; the line between student and teacher begins to blur and there is a loss of respect. Look at it this way - would you want your professor knowing what you do behind closed doors? ;-) Sames goes for them.

Nobody's business. And if they talk about personal things, it will likely just come back to haunt them. Better to stay professional and keep within the boundaries.
