It depends upon what time of the year you are in Thailand.

Certainly I recommend Chieng Mai and even better, Chieng Rai which is further north. Visit those places anytime although Oct-Nov is best for weather. Dec-Jan can be a bit cold and May-July too wet.

Surin Province in November for the "Elephant Festival" is always good.

I would suggest that you visit "the River Kwai" and the "Burma Railway" (same spot). Also the former Royal capital at Ayudiiya. The island of Kho Sumuee mid-way down the peninsular coast is always a good place to visit, as is Pukhet on the West peninsular coast. Both are excellent swimming places.

I would stay away from the Pat Pong area in Bangkok as it is the Bar area and one of the major brothel areas of Bangkok. Also Pattaya which is the brothel area on the beach close to a former US military naval base at Satthahip.

I would also stay away from the 3 most southern provinces of Thailand. They are the Muslim provinces traded to Thailand by Britain in the 1800's for land incorporated into the Burmese border. Those three provinces are close to Malaysia and there is a lot of Smuggling of goods and girls for prostitution. It was from here that the "Pirates" that attacked Vietnamese boat people were based and where they sold the girls they captured. The provinces are also involved in Muslim seperationist military activity, and has been for decades. For a while it had died down but in the past 4-5 years it has increased dramatically. The Communist insurgencies in those 3 provinces has been resolved about 6-8 years ago.

I've been in Thailand on and off for the last 5 years. I'm currently living in Bangkok.

You should definitely spend a few days in Bangkok checking out the major tourist attractions. Have a look at the Bangkok travel guide at http://www.thaistyle.co.nz/travel_guide/Bangkok it has lots of information on tourist activities, attractions, places to stay, things to see and do etc. More travel guides are available at http://www.thaistyle.co.nz/travel_guide/

You should check out the ancient city of Ayuthaya about 2 hours north of Bangkok. The Burmese once invaded Thailand, and they crushed the kingdom, that was at that time based from Ayutthaya.

If you like ancient temples, you should also visit Phisanulok and Sukhothai, in central Thailand.

Chiang Mai and Chaing Rai are definately worth a visit and it wouldn't be complete without a visit to Mae Sai and the infamous golden triangle (where heroin and other drugs are smuggled between the 3 countries of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand). Make sure you visit one of the hill tribe villages.

If you love islands and beaches, try Koh Samet, Koh Chang on the eastern seaboard. Or head south to Koh Samui and Koh Tao (great diving spot).

Phuket and Krabi are also famous tourist meccas.

As stated above, stay away from the deep south of Thailand, were a war is engage between the Thai military and rebel separatists.

If you seek more info, have a look at http://www.thaistyle.co.nz/ A Thaistyle Free World Travel Guide.

Hope you enjoy your trip, and stay safe!

There are 75 provinces in Thailand (76 if you include Bangkok, a special administrative region), most of which are not popular tourist destinations. Most people refer to destinations by the name of the cities they're visiting and not by province. In the north, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are the largest cities, people usually go to these cities as a starting point to other destinations in the mountainous north. In Central Thailand, Bangkok and Pattaya are the two most popular destinations, and in the south the areas in and around Phuket and Koh Samui and very popular beach locations with many other places, islands and beaches in the general vicinities of these two islands. Here's a good website that will list the top destinations and information about them:

Been there quite a few time and traveled quite a bit. Had run north, south, east and west, visited and stayed in a few different provinces already and looking forward to stay in more later. Good insight to the lifestyle there.

I have been to the island of Phuket. It is beautiful. I didnt' stop in Bangkok but I wish I had. Beautiful, a bit dirty thou, but full of culture and exotic places to visit.
Other popular places: Phi Phi Island (where the movie The Beach was shot with Leo Di Caprio), Kho Peng Ngan, and Ko-Samui island.

I've been to roughly 65 provinces, so it's far easier to mention the ones I haven't visited.
