Might mean his little anal glands need cleaning! If you don't know how, your groomer or vet can help you!

His two anal glands need to be squeezed ASAP. Your dog is telling you that he is uncomfortable. It could be due to seasonal allergies so every few months, he will have a recurrence of the problem. Don't trust a groomer to do an adequate job of emptying the sacks because they merely squeeze from the outside (usually). Their procedure, though cheaper ($5 usually), is often inadequate because on a small dog with a tight-skinned rear end, a groomer can't get a good grip. A vet or vet tech will don some gloves and go inside the rectal opening (they're at the 8:00 and 4:00 o'clock positions just below the opening). And, yes, it has a distinctly bad odor.

My dog did that all the time when she was alive, and it pissed me off so much, so I used to scold her all the time and hit her (softly though, dont think bad :), just to educate her....

So she started wiping her bottom on the street (kind of disgusted the neighbors but it was fine with me :), on the grass, etc

Well I guess they dont like to go with a dirty asss all around, so they also wipe it such as we do but they have a different way, that's all, or maybe they feel an itch sometimes, I dont know...you should just teach him NOT to do it at home, just as you probably taught him not to pee or shitt at home...

My dog was doing that for ages, i took him to the Vet & found he had worms. They
wriggle around in the gut & when they made it to the dogs @rse, the squirming drove the poor thing NUTS, all he's doing is scratching to stop the feeling. If you had a worm up your@rse, what would you do? You'd be scratching, right?

Edit--- Lots of wrong answers above and below. Take your dog to the vet to have his anal glands squeezed. ---End Edit.

It's called "scooting," and it's quite common behavior in dogs.

This behavior means that your dog's anal lubricant glands are clogged and need to be "expressed" which means to have the goo squeezed out of them.

Your veterinarian can do it for you, and most dog grooming shops can do it. You can learn to do it yourself. You need some sturdy rubber gloves, and doggie may not like you for a few minutes, but it will stop the scooting. You can expect to do it 3-4 times a year with some breeds, and more often as doggie gets older.

Have fun!

anal glands? Sometimes they need to be expressed. Your vet or a groomer can show you how to do it. Some dogs need to have them expressed often. Some don't. It smells really bad when you do it, but then you dog will be more comfortable and not wipe butt on floor.

It is more then likely your dogs anal glads. I have a medium size dog and he does not scoot but he licks at his butt and then I know it is time to get the vet to "express" them. It is all of 12 bucks to get it done.

Dogs (espectally with smaller dogs) have an anal gland that holds toxins. A professional groomer when grooming will (stick their finger up the hiney) and squeeze the gland, this is what your dog is (unsuccesfully) trying to do.

You need to see your vet. It could be an anal gland impaction or infection. Usually the glands just need a little help with some digital probing by the vet, and yes it is not a pleasant odor. My vet tried to show me how to do it, but no thanks.

He could have worms, just because they're wormed doesn't mean it can't happen later. Something is irritating him, could be an anal gland problem aswell - which can cause the "scooting" behavior. I assume hes uncomfortable and you should take him into the vet as soon as possible.
