I have a Nikon D50. So far the only lens I have is the one that came with it. I have an opportunity to get an inexpensive lens (Vivitar 75-205MM 1:3.5-4.5 MC Macro Focusing Zoom Number 37402977 55MM) and was wondering if anyone knew if they were compatible?

Obviously, it won't autofocus with your camera, but here's a chart to help you with compatibility. It's an AI mount, so it will meter correctly. It may be ok, but there are better options out there.

Personally, I'd recommend the Nikon 55-200mm or 55-200mm VR as better alternatives. They'll be sharper, better designed lenses and provide full functionality with your D50.

I'd suggest looking around. For my D50, I found a very nice Nikon 75-300mm AF lens for $85 and love the results. Here are some example shots.

MC might stand for multi-coated or it might refer to the Minolta mount.

Even if it's a Nikon Ai mount, it won't autofocus. If you want an autofocus lens, try this one instead:

It's a 70-300mm Nikon G lens that's $109.

You'll be a lot happier.

If it is compatible with Nikon it should say so on the box. Your description which includes "MC" makes me suspect this lens is for a Minolta. A Nikon mount would, I think, say "N" or "NIK". Don't quote me though.
