Any ideas on the future of religion? Will people eventually realize that religious thought of all kinds inspires horrors like 9/11, the crusades, witch hunts, mutilations, physical, psychological and sexual abuse, jihad, suicide bombings, genocide, discrimination etc. etc. etc... and mankind will reject religion en masse as a relic of the dark ages, or will religious zealots succeed in destroying civilization in a self-fulfilling armageddon prophecy?

Although your question weighs heavily on the dramatic side i do see what you are asking and in my own dramatic way i'd have to say religion will eventually destroy man. As you said it is basically the cause of most evil happenings in the world - and because people choose to believe so blindly - mankind (at least as we know it today) will most likely be destroyed by such blind faith.

YEAH I LIKE THIS GUY LOL.

One day, people will hopefully understand that there is still segregation in the world and one of the reasons is because of religion. Muslims don't like Christians, Christians don't like muslims, the puritans didn't like any other kind of religion during the Salem Witch Trials. It gets to a point to be rediculous.

I don't think human kind will ever give up religion, being on the fact that we have not found a way to prove what happens after death. I float on both sides of religion and science, as long as there is understandable proof. Now if citizens of the world found a way to determin factually what happens once we die, new religions/beliefs will begin to form. Thus, new problems will arise for mankind to face, just like we have seen in the past with the Salem Witch Trials and 9/11 Terrorist Attacks.

So will mankind destroy religion before it destroys mankind? I believe so, but a religion is just a group of people that share the same beliefs about how we came about on this planet. Many more beliefs will be made in the future on what has yet to be explained, which will once again cause the problems we face now, to occur in the future. Things will never change.

Religions will never join as one, but people will. In fact if you listen, you will hear more comments like "we are all one family" - We all belong to the same energy - we are all brothers and sisters. The world is evolving into the understanding, hopefully, that we are all connected to everyone and everything and what happens to one person happens to another. Religions? No, I personally do not believe that they will ever become one because they, individually, see themselves as the true religion, and every other religion is seen to be wrong. How can mankind become one, if some feel that they are right and everybody else is wrong. We have to be aware that we are all part of the same human family. Human beings NOT having a spiritual experience bu Spiritual beings having a human experience.

It all depends how one's mind set is. This world can't keep law & order without any rules and regulations. So is the case of scio economic structure. the issues that have been pointed out in the current question are almost made to rise due to shear manifestation of some people's personal desire to reach to fame or to gain the power. No independent agency has made any unbiased enquiry about the problems sought under this question. Coming to the point none of the issues under question can be related to any of the prevailing religions of the world. All the religions are nothing but a socio-economic codes, if these codes are implemented in their true sense there shall not exist any of the above problems. In fact no religion shall destroy the mankind but the mind set of the human beings particularly if the section of the mankind which holds power, thinks for the betterment of self and the few who are mentally in their line of thinking. It can be concluded that as long as the mind set of those who are the centers of power thinks and acts for the welfare of mankind irrespective of any bias of border, faith color and creed there shall be no harm due to the presence of any relegion. If any irreversible damaged is done to the mankind in future that could be only the result of selfish and biased mind set of centers of power, or some power mongers.

neither. People will always believe in religion and their are people who use religion for good to you know. Religion will not destroy mankind. Many religions do believe that their will be some sort of event, such as a rapture or many other events that will alter the course of the earth as the evilness is increasing. On the other hand their is also more love and enlightenment as well. Due to the evilness that people are choosing in some circles, people tend to believe the prophecys of an upcoming event to end the world. Evolutionists say that another big bang is coming. So no. Neither. Religion will not destroy us. And yes, people will always believe in some sort of religion

No one can predict the future--Nostradamus notwithstanding. (The wording of his "predictions" is so obscure as to be open to ANY interpretation!) From what I have read and studied in the Bible, conditions on earth will continue to get worse (more war, increased prices--not just at the pump, more polution, more babies dumped as if so much garbage, more greed, continued prejudice, deteriorating weather, etc.). Religion, which is just as divided as the (so-called) United Nations, will NOT unite mankind. Your second sentence: "Will people eventually realize . . " is dead on, except for one point--it is the governments that will finally realize that religion is one of the biggest contributing factors to disunity on earth, and will try to do away with all religions. And, barring accidents, you will live to see it; it will happen very soon (don't ask for a timetable, the Bible doesn't provide one, except for which generation will see this).

All those disasters you listed above are all because they are believing in the wrong religion. The accurate religion is Christianity. Jesus was sent on Earth to pay for our sins and all we have to do is know we are sinners. Everyone has sinned and it says so in the Bible. The Holy Bible is 100% accurate. God commands us to love everyone. If we love everyone there would be no 9/11 disasters, or any sort of thing that would hurt one another. In our religion, we pray to god to thank him and ask for forgiveness. I don't think ALL mankind would reject religion. If they do, they'll spend an eternity in Hell. Anyone who rejects Christ will be punished. God healed the sick while he was on Earth. Why would anyone want to reject him after all of the things he's done for us?

Or will mankind destroy mankind?
What has religion to do with this? It is not a person. People kill each other, not ideas! Aristotel loved Plato and glorified him, even though he did not agree with him on almost anything. We should try and learn a little bit more from the ancient (pre-islamic) people. Ever since conservative and radical islam came (6th-7th century AD) things have changed...

None of the above. Evils of this planet belong to Satan, not religion. Religion is uplifting, not destructive. Satan can't stand being put in his place, so he has temper tantrums like 9/11. I take comfort in the fact that life on Earth is the worst things can be before Heaven, the best it can be before Hell. In other words, for losers, this is heaven. For winners, it's the spiritual boot camp before paradise.
