Better? That depends on the person.
Some people are better off relying on their own self, but not many I think. I tihnk that most are better off with a guidebook and an outside source to attribute things to. They consider themselves to be too fallible to count on.
But a god for Athiests? Hmmmmmm......
Maybe one of the religions where a god has been imprisoned and you are left to fix things on your own? like Scientology?
Or one of the religions made to poke fun at religions?
The Church of the SubGenius is alot of fun.
Or the Spaghetti God.

Pick what God and what deity???
There is only one God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Creator of everything that exist.
The Most High, the All-Hearer and the All-Knowing
The One who knows what you reveal and what you conceal
The One who all creatures need and He needs nothing.
He neither eats nor rest.
The only true God of the heavens and the earth
He is the King of creation and the only ruling judge on the day of resurrection.
Idols and False Gods:
Why do you seek help in things that can neither benefit you nor help you. It can not even speak to you.

Following that, one would need to pick all Gods to insure one hadn't left out what might turn out to be the "right" mythology. Is it better to simply believe someone who tells you that they are an investment banker before you turn over your life savings, or should one put some effort into ascertaining the truth of the assertion?

Er no... you have to go with what you actually believe. Having a "compatible" deity doesn't help if you have no belief to begin with. I mean I'm sure there are pagan deities out there that are "compatible" with Christians, but should us pagans try to convince the Christians that they should change their beliefs? Hell no! That's wrong!

In this world today, there is a multitude of gods. Most will claim the souls of it's followers in the name of hell.
As for not believing in God, it is not any better then believing in a god that is a false God. Both will send the soul to hell.
There is only one God. His name is I am. He sent his Son to die for all mankind, so that all who believe in him will not suffer death. For the Son suffered death for them.
And all who believe in him, though they suffer physical death, their souls are not cast into the place known as death and hell. but goes to be with Jesus in paradise to await the day of resurrection where they will receive a new body, a body that will never die.
Repent and ask Jesus into your heart. For death can come at any moment.

As I understand YHVH, from reading Scriptures, which I understand to be a book from Him, there are only two choices. Either you believe in YHVH, or you don't. If you don't, you are on the outside, and in the end will be toast, which is why He encourages all to "choose life". The first books of Scripture include the marriage contract with YHVH, and His bride will accept His name and His rules.

Going speed dating with, say, 15 different deities in the same room would be wikkid.

I don't really think that it's a matter of "choosing" a God or not. You either find that you resonate with a certain religion or presence, or you don't.
If you don't, then there's really no sense in forcing it.

The perfect deity is that one we all know and love. S/he doesn't exist, doesn't impose rules on our private lives, doesn't get all heavy when we slip up and doesn't try to get us to do what s/he wants by offering us candy.
