Any breed of cat as long as she's not mean to it, I have a 6 month old Siamese mix and he absolutely adores my 5 year old son, constantly following him and he runs to him when he hears my son's voice.

I wouldn't suggest getting her a cat or kitten unless you first talk it over with her parents, a cat would be too much responsibility for a 5 year old, someones got to feed and water it not to mention scooping the litter, buying cat food, litter, toys etc...

Himalayans are of good temperament and so are Russian blues but its not about the type of breed a cat is because no matter where you go there's gonna be a nice cat or no so nice cat and they could both be of the same breed. When dealing with young children though you want to be able to look at the personality of that cat and how well they deal within being frequently picked up or sometimes maybe even accidentally be stepped on. Good Luck with your kitty hunt!

I would not recommend a cat for a 5 year old. Cats are temperamental, kids are rough. I know there are more gentle cats... as there are more gentle kids, but overall the combination "cat - 5 yo child" does not seem to be a good one.

If anything, let her parents make that decision, because most likely, they will do the feeding, take it to the vet etc.

They all want, want, want. She probably doesn't know what a cat is really like or how to care for one. Start with a stuffed one.

Get her a dog, cats will be afraid and aren't social and she will be much happier with a dog. I recommend getting a smaller dog.
