The amount in which a sin affects the relationship between God and a human differs with every human.

I think, in most cases, a Satanist would be a bit worse than an Atheist.

A Satanist knows who God is and freely and completely rejects God in favor of a fallen angel.

In contrast, an Atheist does not even know that God exists and may not have the gift of faith.

Both are considered mortal sins if you look at it objectively. But life isn't that objective, is it? Neither, contrary to what many believe, is the Church. I believe in a merciful, loving God, who would not condemn someone who, for example, had a bad experience with Church that made him/her doubt God's exsistence, but still lived a good, loving life.

Only God knows, and we can not judge by human standards; no one can know God's mind.

I assume you mean Devil Worshiper and not Satanist(Satanists don't believe in Satan, it's a literary figure)

I have no idea, i guess they would both be mortal sins.

but God is the final authority

One group fails to recognize God.
The other group recognizes Him but rejects Him.

Both groups hurt and sadden the Lord deeply.

They are sins, but I'm not 100% sure you could technically call it a Mortal sin because in order for it to be a Mortal sin that you are held accountable for, you would have to be in full knowlege that what you are doing is wrong......but it's really not up to us to decide which is worse, or even to really judge, or think we are better, etc. We are all sinners and none of us are any better or worse than the other. So, I guess my answer is that I, nor anybody else, can really decide that. Its up to God, and only God to decide.

My wife is Catholic and has no view on this.

Catholicism is taught quite differently depending upon what part of the world you live in. It is quite inconsistent. As far as an Atheist is concerned, though (me), it doesn't really matter what silly fears they put into their teachings. Like other Christian churches the teachings are just cult type sillynesses.

I'd say Satanists assuming you mean the kind that actually worships Satan.

If you had kids, wouldn't you prefer that they just don't call rather than slapping you in the face?

Satanist.

Jesus said, "I'd rather have you hot or cold but, lukewarm I will spit out of my mouth"--I think atheists are merely cold but Satanists have already chosen their Master.

what is the difference, they are one and the same. you are either with god , ore the devil.you can't serve both masters.by not believing in anything at all, makes you a servant of Satan no matter how you look at it.

Satanist, obviously.

Both are mortal sins and therefore carry the same weight.
