My female shih tzu is going to be 3 in October but she has started digging again and it is really annoying. She was digging last year so we put boots on her whenever she went outside until she stopped but now she is digging again. I don't want to do anything that will hurt her (smacking) but I want her to stop.

Digging, like chewing, is usually done out of boredom. Whenever your dog is in a position to dig, make sure she is thoroughly exercised beforehand. If she doesn't have too much energy, she won't have the will to dig. Otherwise, make sure she is supervised whenever she may dig. This way, you can firmly discourage the behavior.

Dogs have a tendency to dig when the are not being stimulated ( being walked/exercised) Try walking her. Also there are pellets that you can spread in the area where the dogs digs that give off a smell that keeps the dogs away. You can try putting a piece of the dogs poop in the area where it digs and that will keep it from digging there too. I tried it in my rose garden and it really worked.

Most toy dogs/companion dogs are inside pups (Shih Tzus, Pekingese, Japanese Chin, Etc)
Your Shih Tzu is probably used to going outside, but keep her inside with a few chew toys cuddling with her. She'll adapt to her. . . Or just put her outside with a cage around her.
Hope I've helped! Good luck!

Spen d more time with her- They dig for different reasons- could be boredom- could be she is after a groundhog- could be she is tryin to dig out a spot to lay in to stay cool. I would try and spend more time with her and if/when she tries to do it again tell her" at at" or take a spray bottle and lightly spray her when she tries to do it- that doesn't hurt her, but they dont like it.

when you see her digging call her name and say firmly no, if she doesn't listen tug her gently by the collar and take her away from the spot. give her a chew or a toy to take her mind off the digging and every time she starts command her to stop.best of luck.
