and you knew you were guilty and going down for years unless you sang...would you testify against them?

Or would you go to prison instead?

And why?

If I were arrested for a serious crime---in which someone was hurt, for example, I would have a hard time forgiving myself. Any freedom I had after the fact wouldn't seem worth it. That would be the first problem.

I suppose I would just have to take some deal that the prosecutor would offer me, including testifying against someone else.

If both of you were in on the crime, YES, I'd say make a deal for less time by testifying against him because you can bet your last dollar, he's been given the same choice. It's easy for all of you to say you wouldn't because you haven't been to prison and you've never been in that situation. If someone offered you a way to cut your time from 10 years to 3 or 4, you'd jump at in a heart beat. There is no loyalty between thieves.

It depends on what you mean by testify against a friend. Are you lying about somebody else's guilt to take guilt from yourself? Or are you telling the truth about the entire reality of what occurred, and by doing so implicating the other person and reducing your sentence? If you are guilty of the crime, you should do the time, but so should every other guilty party to the extent that they were involved. If you are lying, the evidence will probably disprove you and then you will have perjury to add to your rap sheet.

If my friend was involved in the same crime and the prosecutor had enough evidence against us, I’d probably take the deal. I know I sound like a jerk when saying this but I’d rather play it safe and testify against him/her before they did the same. Some people might think otherwise and if true put in this situation they’d probably be the only one going to prison.

Wow. How depressing.
If I were guilty of a serious crime, I'd probably kill myself.
However, if another person, a friend, were actually also involved in that crime... then, yes, I would turn them in, as well.

I'm only guessing, though... that is something I cannot even begin to imagine as a possible hypothetical question, as I cannot think of any reason why I would commit a serious crime. I would have to experience some sort of brain damage or dementia, and if that were to happen, who knows whether I'd "sing" or not?

That would depend on a number of things.

I would testify against any friend, regardless of my own guilt, if the crime were murder, rape, child abuse, domestic violence or any non-monetary crime of abuse. If it involved money, I'd have to think harder about the issue. However, my concept of friendship doesn't include enabling my friends in any way to do acts such as the ones I mentioned above.

I would only testify to the truth.

My husband's respect, and that of my parents, means the world to me. I could not look at myself in the mirror if I sold my integrity to avoid culpability. I wouldn't ask for a reduced sentence.

Don't be a SNITCH! If you are guilty than just take the blame. My child is serving a 10 year sentence for people lieing to get sentence reductions, just do your time because the truth will eventually come out and then you will be charged with perjury or worse!

Did they have a part in the crime? Was it an equal part to yours? Are they accusing you of being the main culprit?? There are a lot of things to consider when it comes to a question like this. I just know if I did the crime.... I would do the time. no need to bring other people down. Case closed.

I would go to prison rather than snitch on someone else. There is no telling what they would do if they found out it was me who told on them. You do the crime you do the time. Remember that. Dont bring others down with you.

If you're any kind of human being, you would never blame someone else for your actions. You're selfish and wicked if you do, and you're gonna go to hell too. What you did seems bad if you know already you'll be in jail for a while, so why would you do that to this friend you supposedly care about? The real question is how are you going to live with yourself if you do.
