A FARMER HAS ELEPHANTS AND PARROTS IN HIS FARM HE COUNTED 30 HEADS, AND 94 LEGS IN TOTAL, HOW MANY ELEPHANTS AND PARROTS DOES HE HAVE?

Let E represent number of elephants.
Let P represent number of parrots.
Therefore: E + P = 30 (heads) each has one.
And: 4E + 2P = 94 (legs) they both differ.
Now we have 2 simultaneous equations with 2 unknowns.
Multiply equation #1 by 2:
2E + 2P = 60
Subtract from equation #1:
2E = 34, E = 17 (the number of elephants)
Substitute in equation #1:
17 + P = 30, P = 30 - 17, P = 13 (number of parrots)
Proof by substituting in equation #2:
4(17) + 2(13)
68 + 26 = 94
Left = right side
