My old Church was a dual parish. We celebrated communion on the first Sunday of the month, the other congregation on the second and both congregations on special days such as Christmas Maundy Thursday, and Easter. So it was available twice a month. The Church that I now attend is also a dual parish, but my parish celebrates the Eucharist on the second and fourth Sunday, and the other on the first and third, so it is available four times a month, again with special services when they occur.
A number of Congregations do celebrate Communion every Sunday. These are usually larger congregations that have two services every week. In this case, one service will usually be one of the other liturgies with out Communion, such as Matins, Morning Prayer, or the service of Prayer and Preaching.
Not having Communion allows for more time for studying Gods word, with a sermon that may have more "meat" in it.
A bit of history:
When my father was young, Communion was only celebrated four times a year. On the Saturday night before the service everyone who wished to receive the Sacrament went to private confession. If you missed confession, you were not allowed to receive.
So as you can see, practice varies with time and place. Martin Luther himself, felt the Mass should be celebrated often (every Sunday).
Mark.

The frequency of communion is a choice made by each church... their pastor and council. I know this from our church. When I was a child, our pastor felt communion (because he viewed it as a special event, so to speak) should be served once a month. We changed pastors, and VOILA! It was once every other week. We changed pastors again, and there was some disagreements among the congregants, and our church had 2 services, so it was decided it would be every other week on the alternating services... that is, each week communion was served but at the alternating service.... 1st & 3rd Sundays at Early service, 2nd & 4th Sundays at Late service, and 5th Sundays it was at BOTH services!!!
So you see... it can vary from church to church within the Lutheran congregations.
Have a blessed day.

Rose,
When the Bible said that they had the Lord's Service on the First Day of the week I believe that they intended it to be every first day of the week. Didn't YOU? We have the Lord's Service each and every first day of the week. Have a wonderful weekend and a glorious LORD'S DAY!
Thanks,
Eds

Yes, that's pretty normal. I've been to churches that have it less often.
