Now seriously considering.... I understand using a migration lawyer is important and that it costs around £3,500 - £4,000, any help, comments, advice, recommendations would be gratefully recieved.

Hi Toasty, what year was that? I'm 42 , a nurse and my partner is a joiner - time is running out for us - got to do it in next 18 months - how long did the process take you?

You can do everything yourself - save your money for the actual move, not on some lawyer, or agency !

Research the following sites and see what option is best for you. You, being a nurse is on the Australia shortage skills list, so that is a big plus for you.

I did it through a migration expert and it cost me US$6.500, but I got the visa in 10 months. But I'm from Venezuela. If you're from the UK the process is shorter, and let me tell you that as a nurse you won't have any problems in finding a job as you arrive, or even before that. If you go through the process by yourself it will be a lot cheaper, but it might take longer because there's a lot of forms to fill and you can't make any mistakes because they'll be sent right back if you do, slowing everything down.

l would advise putting it on the market appx 3 months before your hoping to leave - most viewings happen within the first month and if you get a buyer, it will take appx 6-8 weeks to complete. Maybe do it 4mths behind and worse case scenario is that you maybe have to rent or move in with a family member for appx a month! Good luck

I have a friend who has gone for a year maybe longer... it's not that hard to get sorted but you must have the correct paperwork or you could risk being sent back before leaving the airport.

If you live in or near London go to Australia House where they are very helpful

You do not need an immigration lawyer, you pay them huge sums of money to file a few forms on your behalf which you can get for free and file them yourself.

We emigrated, and managed the process ourselves. Not difficult at all. Go to British Expats website, you'll get loads of info there.
