Yes, sort of..... God is part discovery of the 'inner self' aka 'higher self' and part misinterpretation that this self is an external entity. God is certainly a man-made construct to attempt to explain this.

Remember that many people 'turn to god' (cry out in psychic pain to their inner self and connect to it) when they are at their lowest and incapable of understanding that their inner self is incorruptible. This is why they make the understandable error of assuming that since they 'know' they are so worthless, nothing good inside them can be of them and must 'therefore' be external 'god'.

I said 'sort of'.... 'God' *may* actually have existence as a noospheric entity comprised of a sort of 'neuropsychic wireless network'. Remember that these people have already demonstrated the ability to 'reach out' and connect to their inner selves, and so they may also know how to direct this 'reaching out' to other minds. Maybe. This paragraph is quite conjectural.

To complicate matters, religion is a control device created by unscrupulous power-seekers which capitalises on this misinterpretation.

Regardless of the invention question, I think the worldview of god has traditionally been to identify the qualities we think are good or wish we had and multiply them as much as we can conceive of. God is infinitely good, meaning god is as good as we wish we could be, then multiplied as much as we can think of, etc.

Is this a valid conception of god? I can't believe it is and mainly because it makes some very sticky issues, namely the issue of evil, the issue of knowledge, the issue of free will, and a few others. I prefer a more Judaic conception, the one christians basically distorted for their own, where g-d is actually fairly limited, incredibly powerful of course, but still with some limitations.

God is a crutch for all the weak people that can't handle life. That is fine with me as long as they don't try to shove it down my throat. We do have freedom of religion in the USA and I am proud of it. We are not persecuted for our religious beliefs and it should be that way world -wide. We should all believe in a higher power and it should always be your choice who that entity is

No one is going to be able to answer that honestly. Everyone has different beliefs, and it's all what you believe and what is in your heart. I my self believe in God and no way to me is he a human invention. No way.
