The fronts should be all the same series. The rears too but you can sneak by.

Some receivers used to have a feature called the "Phantom" center channel that used the L/R speakers to create a 'image' in the middle to mimic a center speaker.

In general, I prefer a real center speaker. If you already have a spare speaker, go ahead and wire it in. Fire up a good, effect heavy DVD, turn off the TV and just listen. Decide for yourself if the miss-match speakers blow the surround illusion.

I agree with Han that you want your front 3 speakers to be as close to identical as possible. I would not spend money on a center unless it was an exact match for the L/R. But it is always fun to experiment.

I like the Borg battle scene from "Star Trek - First Contact". In about 6 minutes it has a lot of good surround effects.

If you have a good 6.1 system you should have all the 6 speakers hooked up to it. You should have seperate fronts(x2), rears(x3), and center(1). If your gonna do it, do it right.
