“The continued utterance of a lie does not make it true, but it does convince many that it is, particularly if you can squelch most efforts to expose the lie.” Shapley R. Hunter

seems the church tried and still tries to hide the truth (sun centered solar system, round not flat earth...now its evolutions turn)

how many of you that disbelieve in evolution would also have denied the world was round or the earth rotated around the sun? would you have chastised us for making those statements like your christian bretheren did? does it make you feel insecure at all that in the future, people are going to look down at you guys discounting darwin the same way we look at your christian brothers looking down on galileo?

Actually, geocentricism is NEVER mentioned in the Bible. There is nothing that even comes CLOSE.

Also, while Galileo WAS imprisoned at one point, his book "The Assayer" was dedicated to the new pope, who was very pleased with Galileo. And "The Assayer" was written while Galileo was imprisoned. It's also believed that Galileo's later imprisonment had more to do with his insulting of the Jesuits than it did of his ideas on the universe.

Anyway, on to your question. I realize that at one time the Catholic church was very much against science. But you really can't blame them. They weren't the only ones. What, do you REALLY think that theories like those of Copernicus and Galileo were well-met by the blooming scientific community? Of course not! They challenged what scientists prior to those times THOUGHT they knew!

It's important to remember that many of the scientists that contributed to the way we view the world now were theists of some sort, if not Christian.

And actually, modern science has discounted much of Darwin's theories. He had the right idea, but he was off on a lot of things.

I have no problem with evolution, and I'm a Christian.

the church no longer tries to prove the earth is the center of the universe. this in interesting though. this is the wording of the Roman Congregation's decision against galileo.

"the doctrine that the earth is neither the center of the universe nor immovable, but moves, even with a daily rotation, is absurd, and both philosophically and theologically false, and at the least an error of Faith."

again the official church has since grown up and accepted both evolution and that the earth isnt the center of the universe or even the solar system.

Which church, buster ?
Do you know that john calvin, a protestant, burnt Miguel Servet at the stake ?
Servet is famous due to his discovery of the blood circulation, but it was useless against calvin.
By the way, calvin denied Servet request of being executed by hanging.
The Catholic Church didn't approve Galileo's idea of trying to prove his discoveries interpreting at his criterion certain passages of the Bible.
Another point, during the French revolution, the scientist Lavoisier was executed. The republican rulers ( who were extremely antireligious ) said that the republic needed no scientists

You're talking about a different time and culture. You're also talking about one of many reasons why many believers broke away from the catholic church.

I would ask you to show me the exact verses in the bible that say the sun is not the center of the solar system, and the earth is flat. Because, you have your facts wrong. It was actually the church who was telling everyone the earth was round, and that it sat suspended in a vast emptiness (see Isaiah), while the rest of the world was positing that the earth was flat. Read up on your history. In fact, the whole reason Christopher Columbus set out to sea, (and this is from his own writings) was to prove that christians were correct - that the earth was round. (Don't forget, Chris was a devout christian, and he was tired of the secular world trying to debunk the bible's accounts of a round earth.) Just read the history before you spew lies online. And, yes, evolution cannot stand up to scrutiny, which is why the other side of the debate is CENSORED from the school textbooks. There is plenty of scientific data that debunks an "old earth" model. I gave you a website to go to. I hope you are open-minded enough to go to it.

My Lawyer got me 3.3 million dollars because my Doctors screwed up!

If Dr. Clyde Tombough was alive today MY lawyer would be suing him for 3.3 million for leading me to believe PLUTO WAS A PLANET.

I should sue McGraw Hill an Follettes for perpetrating that myth to me in school last century!

The 17th Century is over for me as a Catholic Christian.

I have no problem with the heliocentric theory of the church-honored Catholic canon Copernicus, nor does the Church
I think the church hierarchy learned its lesson and has stayed out of purely scientific debates(unless there is areal moral issue like embryonic stem cell killing)

Funda. Prots. do not seem to have learned the lesson in the area of evolution.

Religion and the physical sciences are"non overlapping magisteria"(ie they have different" facts' to deal with and different areas of expertise ) ,as Stephen J Gould said.

possibly you're able to fairly seek for advice from God's be conscious, the Bible that's the only source of perception in Christ. then you definately might see that the Roman Catholic Church is crammed with the spirit of blunders and antichrist and relatively adversarial to the genuine awareness of God and of Jesus Christ and His Gospel and people who follow Him. it may declare to be Christian to misinform human beings yet in certainty it makes use of Christ's call to fool human beings with the intention to acquire converts to itself and replace Christ with itself. it relatively is been dazzling powerful in deceiving people who're no longer able or who do no longer difficulty to seek for for the certainty. there are a number of important proofs of this, too many to record here, yet to handle your particular factor : people who follow Christ will follow His coaching, for sure. hear what He stated on your particular factor - And while his disciples James and John observed this, they stated, Lord, wilt thou that we command hearth to return down from heaven, and consume them, whilst Elias did? yet he grew to become, and rebuked them, and stated, Ye know no longer what way of spirit ye are of.
