I am interested in joining the NAVY and I have talked to a recruiter about joining the NAVY as an enlisted and I wasn't know that with a BS degree I could join the NAVY as an officer (the OCS program) until I did some research online.

I am a permanent resident and I have already applied for U.S. citizenship. I am just waiting for the interview to become an U.S citizen. Should I wait till I get my citizenship or just join the navy as an enlisted?

I was told that there's a GPA requirement for OCS and my GPA is way too low to compete with others. Is there anyway that I can off set the low GPA ?

I want to do something relative to civil engineering. If I joined the navy would I be guaranteed that I would stay in the field of civil engineering?

What are the differences between an officer and an enlisted for a 2 year contract.

Thank you for your time !

There are no two year contracts in the Navy. With your degree you could join with a guarantee of assignment to Navy Construction Battalions and Regiments, better known as Navy Seabees. Your entry could even speed up your citizenship quest as well. Once you obtain your citizenship you should apply for a commission in the Navy Civil Engineer Corps. I'm sure that B.S. in Civil Engineering will fit in quite nicely with that Corps.
The GPA requirement you cited is for those who wish to obtain a commission as a Navy Line Officer, via the OCS route. It does not apply to those seeking commissions in the various Staff Corps of the Navy.

1. The Navy says you need a degree in civil, mechanical or electrical engineering, but im sure chemical engineering would be fine. 2. You do know, civil engineers are restricted line officers, right ? that means no command opportunities IE: you will never be an admiral 3. Civil engineer officers spend just as much time at sea, as every other officer does. 4. No the Navy will NOT send you to get a masters degree 5. so if your GPA was a 3.5+, give the Navy a call if it was lower, don't waste your time

The navy has two types of recruiters... Officer and Enlisted.

He's my advice based on 22 years of experience. Get your US citizenship and come in as an Officer. If you want to serve just two years there should be a way you can join the Navy Reserve, serve two years active, and then go into the Active Reserve for the remainder of your obligation.

The difference between Enlisted and Officer are too numerous to list. Suffice to say you'll quickly be earning significantly more money than even Senior Enlisted personnel.

Insist on speaking to an Officer Recruiter.

If your GPA is low then very likely you will not get OCS in the Navy, it's VERY competitive. Also, you have to be a citizen first to be an officer. You can enlist with perm residency & get your citizenship after a year.

If you want to be an officer, and trust me when I say you really do, then you might try looking at the Army. They don't care so much about GPA & need officers bad, especially for engineer slots.

A recruiter is going to tell you what you want to hear to get you interested in joining. I'm not saying don't join. That's your decision! Usually it takes some time (a year or even longer) before you get the assignment that you really want. You might get the duties of a deck seaman chipping paint off the side of the ship, only getting 3 hours of sleep everynight (if that even), scrubbing the toilets, kp duty, and what have ya'. If your willing to do this, I say go for it. It's a different experience for everybody that enlist!

The ball is in your court, you can do whatever you choose to do.

I had enlisted soldiers working for me that had Masters Degrees, it all depends on what you want to do in life.

If you plan on making the military a career, then it might be better if you were a commissioned officer.

The majority of the soldiers that had graduate degrees were just in the military for 2 or 3 years to do their obligation to serve their country. That is what they told me, who am I to question their motives.

in your SPECIFIC case, I suggest enlisting, and once you become a citizen apply for OCS from within.

Go SeaBees. best Civil Engineers in the business. they do have SeaBee Officers as well.

Go officer if you possibly can. They will take into account that your degree is in Civil Engineering...it's not just a lightweight major.

Go for an officer.Don't worry about your scores (Remember Bush Jr. had one of the lowest scores in pilot training and in all the schools he has attended and look where he is)
Go for it and if you have a BS get into Officer training
