Good answers in the first one. I would also add http://www.bookingbuddy.com which will search Hotwire, Kayak, and many other meta-searches and consolidators, and I would add http://www.smartertravel.com/airfare/search/?type=departure which shows any last-minute specials direct from airlines.

no way, last minutes is very expensive unless you go sat and return mon, tue in selective routes.
