Are there any observable differences between cod and haddock fillets? I need to know because our grocery store mislabeled it and one of my dinner guests got sick (haddock allergy).

i couldn t be sure but i think that a cod fillet is alot whiter than haddock which is slightly darker and the flakes of flesh not as big as the cod, if it still has its skin on the fillet its alot easier, why?..well god has a very silver under"belly" and is more golden with golden spots on its back. haddock is a darker grey/brown colour with a black/grey line running all the way from its head to the tail

Seafood sellers now right to name fish in the same family under one name, so haddock, scrod and pollack can be labeled and sold as cod. The best way to tell its codfish is that when it's cooked, cod will break apart in larger chunks. Any other white fish is more flaky.

About 15 years ago, a law was passed that gave seafood sellers the right to name fish in the same family under one name. That's why today fluke are called flounders. And haddock and pollack are called cod. Best way to tell its codfish is the white layer on top of the fish. And once it is cooked, it stays chucky. Other fish flake.
