pros - you will get yourself in excellent condition , you'll gain confidence, you'll be able to hit someone legally.. cons - you'll get hit back, BUT if you really get yourself conditioned well you can avoid lots of punches by moving around more... so, you can probably do ok. there's lots of fighters that don't take a beating. and if you are, you can quit the fight or your corner can call the fight. There are risks to boxing - but if you are well conditioned and fast - your risks are less. work on your hand speed, etc. here's my list below of things that may help -
you are probably just fine.
here's what I would suggest doing.
1) swimming - you can really get a lot of conditioning done through swimming and it really will help you build your shoulders, chest, etc.
2) take up the drums/percussion - it will help you develop your hand speed.
3) don't laugh but they make dumb-bells for water and you can work out in the water and build strength. I got mind at waterworkout.com
4) watch boxing frequently - part ofit is training and another part is mental - knowledge. in particular watch fights fromthe 1950's lots of great fighters in that era and good technique to watch.
5) if you aren't a lefty = start doing everything left handed and don't tell people you are right handed if you are- they dont' need to know. then you can suprise your opponent with the right - it willl take a while to get coordinated with the left- but it will be worth it. Watch George Foreman - he has a great jab.
6) practice walking forward, backwards, sideways - you need to be able to move just as fast backwards , and sideways as you do forward. It will help a lot.
7) work on your uppercut and body shots -and learn where allthe organs in your body are. learn every pressure point, and everything. know your anatomy well, so you know which places are weak and where to hit your opponent.
8) do things like chop wood, basic manual labor tasks - it will help you build strength.
9) jump rope a lot
10) get a speed bag and a heavy bag - and imagine when it moves that's your opponent that is moving.
11) you need to get where you are working out several hours a day...
12) consult a nutritional consultant because you'll need more nutrition to cover what you are going to be burning.
hope all this helps you...

Pros: build confidence, increase overall health significantly, self-defense
Cons: cost
Remind your parents that Boxing is not just jumping into a ring and getting punched. You workout to your own comfort level, and don't have to do anything you aren't ready for, or are incapable of handling.

pros are getting healthy, building muscle, knowing how to fight in real life fist fights. cons are potential injury risk, it can be time consuming, and it can sometimes effect you emotions in a negative way. (And sparring can be scary at first, but it isn't really a con or a pro. Its really an activity that can go either way.)
