if you're following biblical ideas, then you'll sleep.... you cannot go straight to heaven or hell as you've yet to be judged... that's on judgement day.... and whenChrist comes again, he's to bring the dead from their graves... not from heaven or hell, but from the grave..... so those in the grave are sleeping, waiting.....

We souls are made to sleep until Judgment Day. But the punishment of sinners start in graves. Depending on how bad they were in this life, either they get punished for short while or they will be punished all the time in graves. Whereas people who deserve heaven sleep without any problem. When they will be resurrected, they will feel like they slept few hours as as we do in this life.

I am a Mormon, LDS member, I can tell you what we believe.
We believe when a person dies, their spirit goes to either "prison" or "paradise"...to await the millenium and judgement. Prison is for those souls who have not accepted the gospel or have unrepented sins. Paradise is reserved for those who have accepted the gospel and did all they could in this life to live by it's prinicples... those in prison can be taught the gospel, accept it and "move" to paradise. THat is one reason we perform saving ordinances for the deceased, because if they accept the gospel after this life, they can still have a chance at exaltation.
After the millenium and judgement, all will inhabit whatever kingdom/degree of glory they have attained - Celestial, Terrestrial or Telestial.

Maybe purgatory, or maybe...just maybe... you stay dead.

Enjoy life while you're living it, and accept it for what it is, a beautiful, finite gift.
