Our children only watch a max of 1 hour per day of TV. They only started watching TV after age 3. We have always used a "ticket" system in our home. Our children are given 4 tickets per day- 2 for the TV (1/2 hour for each ticket) and 2 tickets for the computer (15 minutes each ticket). Once they have used up their tickets, well then thats all folks! The tickets are great because I use them as a way of making sure they make good choices. If they do not behave well, whine for any reason, etc... then I take a ticket away! Those tickets are like gold to them!

Four hours of television is bad for their minds, eyes, and coordination. You are the MOM, and it's not your girl's fault she doesn't want to play. Put the remote out of reach and start paring down her TV time. Get her into a sport, buy her a cool new bike, go to the YMCA--whatever it takes. Kids under 13 should NEVER get more than an hour of TV at a time unless it's a special treat like a movie or baseball game.

I guess we know who is in charge at your house. Turn off the tv . she Whines then she does not get tv the next day, keeps whining then it is two days. Continues then she goes to her room. She will get the message. Kids ahould have no more than 1 hr of screen time. Whether that is TV, Computer or game stations

a blue tub?
What sort of an adult asks the kid do they want to go outside and play? In my reality the grownups make the rules, they don't ask for permission to be in charge.
4 hrs of television every day is extremely excessive and the mark of a lazy uninterested parent.

Not as long as I sit on this laptop reading these questions
It is a sort of obsession ---I would look for a Hobie out side of the house maybe a couple of times a week--
dancing class---swimming ---horse riding --etc--
ask your daughter apart from the television what would she -really like to do ---for a Hobie---and if she is too young for you to ask this question take her some-where you can both enjoy together
good luck

My children do not watch Tv during the week.. I will make exceptions every once in a while and allow them a movie after school but homework must be done first.

Lets start by not being insensitive here, come on guys.. sometimes things are easier said than done.
Kids aren't controlled as easy as everyone thinks, especially in today's world. But you could try to restrict your daughter a bit more. Try setting some ground rules that specify the amount of time she can spend infront of the tv everyday. Try explaining to her that it's not healty for her and try to find out more what interests your daughter so that you can try helping her. good luck

Of course she doesn't want to do anything else. You shouldn't give her the choice, and you shouldn't give into her whining. It's not healthy to watch so much TV all the time. Set rules that specify how much TV she's allowed to watch each week, and enforce them. Meanwhile, provide interesting, educational and fun alternative ways for her to spend her time.

i think if a child is of school age they should be made to do their homework first, then its np more that 2 hours of the "boob tube" children need fresh air and excersise, sitting infront of the tv after school is not good for a child, theyll grab a snack and plop down ,which leads to obesity,
