If love is a universal language do we really need religion for moral guidlines? If we don't then what do we need? What would bring people to a sense of unity?

ooooo

What's love got to do, got to do with it?

No, we don't need religion, in fact, religion hampers the cause of morality because it confuses people.

What we need is clarity and knowledge.

You might find Darwin's Dangerous Idea interesting. The last chapters are about this very topic. (and the rest of the book worth reading, too)

While I don't think we need religion and especially not for moral guidelines, there may be a genetic propensity for it in some people. This means that we may be stuck with it for awhile in some form or another.

Love may be a basis for morality but there are other basises as well, like survival of the species and planet.

Unity is brought about by many things other than religion, and religion obviously has problems with promoting it as well ("Catholics aren't Christian", "Yes we are" - yeah that's unity).

We don't need religion, but we need God. Religion can't do anything for us, it just seperates us, and brings people against each other.
But believing in God and serving Him, reading the Bible (because that's where we learn right from wrong and get wisdom on how to live) and going to a good Bible teaching church, and confesing our sins to God. will give people the purpose of life, and Holy Spirit will give believers unity and love

We need spirituality more than religion... and what would bring unity? Tolerance

We certainly don't need religion for moral guidelines though some people may feel they need it for other reasons. (I think they're wrong).

Morality is founded in human nature and experience. What we need is a commitment to co-operate for the benefit and happiness of all humankind.

Order, peace, stability, continuity and integrity. That's what everyone needs, religion provides. The Bible is a rock. READ IT!

Well, what if we wrote down those moral guidelines of what works and what doesn't? Just, how about we cut all the crap out that religion consists of and just focus with the "ways of life?"

That's buddhism, no crap, just logical paths

Authentic religion lives its ethical mandate of love, compassion, mercy and fidelity.; If an expression of some sort of religion does not then it is not real religion.

Religion is for those who want to follow a set of timeless guidelines rather than make them up as they go along.

If you have to ask this question, naturally, I would think you dont need religion. And thats all good by me.

But I do. And thats my right.

Religion gets in the way of our humanity as often as it helps. We'd be better off without false concepts like god, or heavenly reward, or hellish punishment.
