Army, Air Force, and Marine captains are equal in pay grade to Navy Lieutenants (O-3). That's the only similarity. A Navy captain is equivalent to a colonel in the other services. I'm a military fiction author and know this stuff by heart.

No, in the Army, Air Force, and Marines a Captain is an O-3 in pay grade and a 1st Lieutenant is a O-2 and 2nd LT is a O-1. Captains clearly outrank LTs.

Depends on which Captains and Lieutenants you're comparing.

Army/Air Force/Army Captains are paygrade O-3, same as Navy and Coast Guard Lieutenants.

In the Navy and Coast Guard, Captains are paygrade O-6, same as Army/Air Force/Army Colonel.

No! Captain is O-3, 1st Lieutenant is O-2, 2nd Lieutenant is O-1. (This is the rank structure for Army, Air Force and Marines... navy is different and I cant remember how it goes...) the only simularity they have is that they are both commissioned officers... O-3 would be the highest ranking out of the 3.

I think you are a little mix up. In the Navy a LT has rank that is the same in the Army, Air Force, and Marines and that is the equivalent of a Captain in those services

The rank you're referring to is O-3 (officer, 3rd lowest in ranking)

A Captain is an O-3 in the Army, marines and Air force.

A Lieutenant is an O-3 in the Navy.

Do you know what the difference is between a Captain in the Army and a Buck Sergeant in the Army...?

You have to EARN Buck Sergeant in the Army...

Warm regards,
Douglas

If you look at the rank of a Navy Lt and a Marine Capt it is the same rate, an 03 and they look the same. However, A Navy Capt has the same insignia as a Marine full bird Col, an 06.
Maybe that is what you are talking about. It is a little confusing because the officer ranks are all the same in the Marines, Army, And AF. I guess the Navy has to be different.

only if you are comparing the Navy and CG O3 with everybody else. A Navy/CG O3 is a LT. an Army, AF and Marine O3 is a Captain.
