I have the same problem, luckily finding a product that works is easy. I use: BOUNCE that specifically says on the box FREE OF DYES AND PERFUMES, DERMATOLOGIST TESTED.
You can find this at pretty much any store, I get mine from wal-mart, and they are the fabric softener sheets. Also, if your son is allergic you might want to switch your detergent in that case I use: liquid ALL (brand) It is a white bottle or jug (depending on the size you get) I have ALL SMALL AND MIGHTY which also says FREE CLEAR : FREE OF PERFUMES AND CLEAR OF DYES also RECOMMENED #1 BY DERMATOLOGISTS. This product is also available at wal-mart.
Both of these products are very affordable and easy to find. They both work wonderful and I haven't had any allergies with these products!

Don't they sell a tumbling ball or something at Linen N Thing or Bed, Bath and Beyond for the dryer?
If not, just go without the fabric softner in your wash. Use a regular detergent.

that is the benefit and leap! I used the Tide with Downy for years and the dryer sheets and fabrics softner. and switched to attain and leap also! and that i'm continually itchy and so become my son. I switched back and washed each and everything and become tremendous. It took a minute b/c I had to rewash each and everything! I forgot to do the sheets and blankets for a pair days and when I washed them and the towels i become ok. i imagine that is the parfume they use in it it really is so good.

That's easy. Try softener sheets. I'm not a sensitive person, I never change detergents. Over the years when I did, I'd get a rash.
Using liquid softener you may NOT be having the clothes rinsed well enough. DON'T use any softener on towels. They repel water and that may be where he's getting the rash.

He may be only allergic to something in the softener, my husband can't use any laundry detergent with pine in it because he is allergic to pine, try some other types, check the labels for a additive that is in the one you are using, you may figure out what is triggering the allergies.

try using those dryer balls. I think you can find them at giaim.com. Not only do they fluff your clothes, they use NO chemicals (like softener or dryer sheets) they produce NO waste (like dryer sheets) and use no chemicals that get into the water supply (like fabric softener)
So not only will it help your son with his allergies, but you are doing something good for the environment.

Fabric softener doesn't actually soften your fabrics, it simply coats them with chemicals to make them appear softer. I would stop wasting my money all together for the sake of my son if I were you.
