I work with the homeless veteran population in a 2 year transitional housing facility. My job is to find housing for my clients when their two years are up. Their rent is currently 30% of their income which is usually a pension from social security or the VA. None of my clients get more than 900/mo... some get only 600/mo.

Several of my clients have felonies on their record from when they were in their 20s... they're now in their late 60s and don't qualify for affordable housing through the housing authority bc of their background. Where do seniors who have felony backgrounds live when all they have is their social security to live off of?

I live in Las Vegas and have contacted metro and they didn't know. I'm waiting on a call from a case manager at one of the correctional facilities for any halfway houses that are around, but I'm wondering if it would be affordable... esp for my clients that only recieve 600/mo. Any ideas?

You city, like all major cities, should have access to HUD resources and actually have a local Housing Authority.

They are the ones that would deal with and offer assisted housing for these folks. HUD will also help subsidize apartments for people in these situations.

It has nothing to do with being a felon.... has to do with age and income and ability to work when you are talking about senior housing.

I will start by saying that I am very fortunate to have been set on a good path early on, but one of my favorite stickers says

"Keep working, millions on welfare depend on you"

With that being said, I don't think the elderly should be shunned and forgotten, but those who are doing well worked hard in some way or another to be ok once they retired. Maybe these seniors you are dealing with should continue working on a limited basis to augment their income.

If I have to work 2 jobs and 7 days a week to cover my bills and have a comfortable lifestyle, why should these people be taken care of by default?

So my honest, yet unpopular opinion, would be for them to continue working (once they hit a certain age, they automatically get SSI and can work if they choose). There are plenty of jobs that are very well suited for the elderly and not so for younger people.

Election poles
Store Greeters
Docends
Librarians (not the ones with master's degrees)

Take a look at my source links below for a few options. A search for "jobs for the elderly" brings up quite a few options.

I sincerely doubt the employers will care about their 40 y/o felonies. They also should have taken life a bit more seriously.

Also in response to Alexandriaferrari1. They're not all Vets. The VA offers services for them. We're talking about seniors who were punks back in the 60s and now don't know what to do with themselves.

Contact HUD immediately and use legal aid. Then make a big issue with local media and contact your local congresssman because they don't want to be viewed as the bad guys that ddissmissed the homeless veterans. Hold a demonstration in a public park and offer refreshments and speakers as well a as flyers and pick a name for the cause
like people for homelesss vets or something like that

Isn't that discrimination? If they are 60 and the felony happened in their 20s it is ridiculous for them to be penalized. Especially if there have been no felonies in those 40 years.
I work with the elderly. Finding them affordable housing is impossible. This is an issue that should be spoken from the roof tops. There doesn't seem to be any compassion for this situation. The only answer I have is to become active in the community and push this issue forward. If it isn't a money maker it is hard to get the attention needed.

have you ever contacted HUD yet? Housing & city progression could be listed below the government part of the telephone e book or on the internet. attempt entering "senior housing" and you ought to get some web content OR memories approximately advancements that are being built by making use of investment companies in varied communities. Then purely do a seek below the call of the corporate that's doing the advancements & rebuilding of latest platforms & changing them into "Low-earnings senior housing". I stay in one among their California homes & it is likewise pronounced as "government backed housing" & "assisted renters rebate housing". in view that's a federal application, then i might think of that it stands out as an identical for all states...yet i could not assure it as actuality! we've a 40% cap on the quantity of $$$ that we rather pay (make a contribution) to the owner for our volume of the out-of-pocket month-to-month lease. you in addition to mght ought to need to do a seek making use of SRO (single Room Occupancy), those are one room residing areas that usually have the loos exterior the rooms & shared by making use of different tenants. good success...it takes years to locate decrease priced housing (particularly situations)...have help is a good element. Many felons stay in my complicated, so i don't think of having an previous checklist is as a lot of a difficulty as having a contemporary checklist & being on parole. We even have some registered intercourse offenders & they only want to stay off the streets & out of detention center. have you ever in addition to mght tried contacting different Case Managers at interior sight shelters & emergency centers in one day wintry climate shelters? They ususally have varied information at their disposal.
