as long as people are genuinely interested in becomming better people and being kind to one another, I have no problem with belief in a higher power. some would question my faith, but I actually believe in Christ myself, and study his teachings as they've been handed down to me from various sources. but I also consider the transmission of the written sources and look for the presence of Christ in the world around me, not just in a collection of books. as far as the story of Abraham, put yourself in that position. are you a parent? i think that that episode is an important one to think about because usually any story that evokes so many strong and conflicting responses from the reader must have something to impart to us. still as a parent, I don't think that I'd be so ready to kill my own child to prove my faith, and isn't this the same Abraham that bargained with God over the judgement of Sodom and Gomorrah?

I have no problem with anyone believing in any mythology. I only take an interest when their belief impacts my life, such as when people want to invoke the Christian God before a public high school graduation, or invoke the Christian God during the Pledge of Allegiance, or invoke the Christian God while shooting a doctor at a clinic, etc...
Believe what you like.
But allow me the same courtesy.

Because what inevitably ends up happening, is...believers seek government validation/support of their belief system in the forms of laws/measures that all citizens of various belief systems, not all of them christian, must follow.
That's where the trouble starts...
For example....how many christian organizations this year, during the holiday season, do you think are going to attempt to put a nativity scene up on public property?
And how many of those same christians would be outraged if asked to take it down...or allow someone of a different belief system to erect a small token of their belief system along side the nativity scene???
Christians want to have their cake and eat it too....we can't allow that.

I really don't mind most Christians, I'm actually about to marry one.
However, believing in a higher power has stopped politicians from releasing a vaccine for HPV, which causes cervical cancer. Thousands of women die from cervical cancer every year, but because it is safer for people to have sex, the politician believes more people will engage in sex out of wedlock. He values the Bible more than human lives, and that is not right.
It can be dangerous for people to believe in a higher power. Crusades, Sept. 11, etc. You, believe whatever you want, but religion can be dangerous.

If no one can convince you that Christ may not exist, you can't convince me the bloke exists either. That's beating a dead horse. Mountain Dew makes me happy. Being with my nephews makes me happy. I don't need some invisible deity for that purpose.

It's when those personal beliefs enter our schools, courts and government that the problems really start. Keep your god at home and at church and you'll hear less complaining.

Personally believing in fairies, leprechauns, gnomes, unicorns, and ghosts makes me happy too. Besides I happen to agree with Hayden Lyfe on this one.

If it makes you happy to believe, then have at it... it's ok with me. The problem is when christians try to mandate their beliefs to non-believers... that, I'm not ok with...
Make you a deal... don't try to make believing mandatory, and I won't try to make atheism mandatory!
