I ve been an @ home mother for the past 8 years. I didnt go to college and feel quite intimidated to go back. I really would like to hear from moms that went through this transition. Leaving the house work and kids to pursue a career. How did you deal with child care expenses and school at the same time. It seems impossible!!!!! I really would like to accomplish this soon. Thanks for your help!!

Well congratulations to you, first of all, because you did the right thing, raising your child(ren). I am in the middle of doing the same thing, my son is 6 and I left work 3 years ago to take care of him (I'm single).

One piece of advice I'd give you is to start slowly. Unfortunately, Motherhood is the #1 undervalued (and underpaid!) job in the world, and employers are not always understanding about someone being out of work for so long (although I'm sure you 'worked' very hard over those 8 years!)
Start slowly, with maybe a retail or restaurant job if you can get one. As for school, I'm not sure where you live, but here in Ontario, you can go to Employment Assessment Centers, and they can try to get you funding through the Government for school. Also you can get subsidised for Daycare. Or they can try to help you find a job.
This is not impossible!!! I wish you the best of luck in all your endeavours - you're making the right choice to get back on your feet again

I am not a stay-at-home mom (or even female). But it's perfectly understandable that you feel intimidated. At least when employers ask you about your 8-year gap in employment, you'll have an excellent answer! Do you know what sort of work you want to do? You can try a number of ways to hunt for a job: internet, employment firms, newspaper ads and networking. Unless you've already been hired.
Unfortunately, I cannot speak to the child care expenses, school, etc.

First thing you need is some good training in a field where you can earn real money - not $6 an hour at the local fuel-mart. That's going to take about 2 years for a technical degree - but well worth it.

Consider the health field - medical technician, nurse, radiological technician, dental hygienist etc.

Talk the the counselors at your local community college. They can help you not only pick a career - but help you find the means with which to pay for it as well.

Good luck! I know you'll be happy to show your children that moms can not only be nurturers - but breadwinners as well.

Hi I waited until both my kids were in ashool, so that I could take some career training myself. In other words, we were all in school at the same time . If you have access to a social worker in your community I would enquire if there are programs that offer assistance to mature students. I don't know what your special interests are, but one way of entering a field is to offer the agency/company to give your sevices as a volunteer. This may lead to a career, or at least may bolster up your resume. My next door neighbour a passionate animal lover volunteered at at an animal clinic to assist with the grooming of pets. She now has a successful business operating from her own home. Lots of good luck!

Do you have someone to help you with childcare: friends or family..cause it's extremely expensive

You have to overcome your intimidation of going back...the first step is to walk into the classroom. Keep in mind that you are there for you...not for what others think of you

Good luck

I'm going back to school monday but I'm very excited about it....from one stay at home mom to another

Do you need to both work and go to school while trying to raise kids?

That sounds a bit much all at once!

If you took a couple of clases while your kids are in school, you wouldn't have to pay childcare. (Or see if the college has child care facilities for children of students.)

Or is it that you need the income right now?

Sorry, I'm not a mom.

Best of luck to you!

I was in your boat. I went back to school (Katherine Gibbs) with savings money, (was going thru a divorce) plus my parents kicked in some money. I did a 6 month course and then they got me a job afterwards. Although I got paid really crappy it got me back into the work environment and when my confidence built up after a year I got a job on my own and make really good money. I hope this helped. Their grandparents watched them afterschool. Good luck!

Breaking and Entering. You won't get paid for being in the workplace, but at least you'll be there.
