I've taken a paper clip and pounded it flat (with a hammer). After flattening it, I curve the flat plane slightly so it better fits into the hole. Use a nail to bend the curve.

Then it's a matter of jimmying the flat 'blade' in between the plastic and the pin to releasd the hook. Carefully do one side while pulling up with constant pressure (with needle nose pliers on the pin end or wire), then when one side is released, do the other side.

This works more often than not, while keeping the pin semi re-usable (from a mechanical point-of-view anyway).

You can sometimes bend the little catches on the pin with a skinny pair of needle nose pliers. But without the extraction tool, you might just break the pin. IF you want to eliminate the pin, then you might be better off breaking it off as close to the wall as you can.

You have to have a pin extraction tool, b/c of the captive design of the shell (that keeps both male and female pins in place. This is a small tool with a barrel that allows you to push the pin out past this little captive notch. I used to have one, but lost it, so now--on the rare occasion I make a serial cable--I have to throw the whole thing away and start over if I make a mistake. :-(
