These tactics have worked for a long time. However, they have obviously lost their impact with many people since church membership continues to dwindle and many who remain do not believe the teaching. (Compare 1Timothy 3:1,5) It is no wonder since this teaching is inconsistent with God's love and with what the Bible teaches about the condition of the dead, that they are conscious of nothing thus unable to suffer or do anything. (Ecclesiastes 9:5,10)

The meaning of all religious terms has changed dramatically over the centuries. The interpretation of Scripture advocated by Sunday School teachers is as far removed from the intent of the original authors as the microwave is from the fire-pit. But it's useless to tell a "Christian" that, because he'll only respond to statements that are specifically calculated to resonate with his programming, which is based on the Sunday School interpretation.

However, it's clear from a reading of the Gospels (as they stand) that Jesus preached eternal punishment for those who fail to accept him. Practically all of the famous parables have no other moral than this. Believe in me, or weeping and gnashing of teeth in the "outer darkness." I mean, I appreciate the efforts of the people who try to argue that Jesus was really a great guy, and he's just been misinterpreted by his followers; but nearly all of the "objectionable" beliefs of the modern-day fundies are patent in the text of the Gospels.

Scientists, the two theist and atheist, anticipate that the solar will end its existence as a purple sizable in approximately 5 billion years. human beings won't exist at that factor so there'll be no humanity to wipe out. present day human beings have been around for roughly 2 hundred,000 years. The evolution of human beings over the subsequent million years, could we final that long, will see a sparkling species of Homo as diverse from Homo sapiens as H sapiens is from H erectus. Multicellular existence in the international is in simple terms approximately 0.5 1000000000 years old and in that factor we've seen a great form of existence formes evolve. in the subsequent billion years, if existence nevertheless exists, each and every species alive as we communicate would be extinct and the planet will seem very diverse from the way it does as we communicate.

Why do MOST religions continue to use scare tactics to keep followers from leaving?

Because religions are not about spirituality. They are all about power and control in the temporal, physical world.

The theory of eternal torment is just one of the reasons why so many people dislike christianity. Satan is constantly working at destorting the true meaning of christianity.
People have been brought up to believe that God is ready to cast them into hell and that He will enjoy doing it.
How can a loving Father enjoy punishing His children?
During the Millenium, the books will be opened. The universe will understand that the lost are destroyed because of their own choices. We will understand that true and just are His ways.
If you love God, and God lives in your heart; your desire will be to please Him. Scare tactics only distance people from God. Teach of God's love and the rest will be added.

That is a tactic that almost all religions use. Note I did say almost, there are some that don't. But they are very few and far between.

Islam, Christianity and Judaism certainly do not fall into the religious group that does not use scare tactics.

You left out geenna and tartaroo. One hs to decide whether such a place exists and if it does in what sense. If it is real and a place of any kind of torment fear is justifiable. i still wonder why so many people never mention geenna or tartaroo. It's in the same bible.

I don't think that really works, I know some people who are devout Catholics who rather believe that they are going to hell than live on an Earthly paradise.

Because they work.

Just look at the government, how do you keep citizens in check? By creating a law with harsh punishments.

Scare tactics rules.
