...and also when you are addressing them in a letter? Please don't ask why I don't know this, but I don't and very embarrassed by that. Is it "Shri", should you find out their name and use it as well? Does it change depending on if they are a priest of Shiva, Mataji, or Vishnu? Thank ou for answering this.

this depends on which part of country u belong to.

in the north of India, u just call them or address them as pandit ji.

In Orrisa they call them Pandas.

In Maharashtra, just call them Maharaj.

In karnataka u call them Butts.

In Kerala, u can call them by their post in a temple. They can be Namboodris or MelShanthi.

In Tamizh nadu u call them Kurukkal in Shiva temple, Battar in Vishnu temple and otherwise as Pujaris. The term pujari is used in common for all non-brahmin pundits.

In Andhra, Archakar is the term used. In Tiorumala Tirupathi alone they call them Battar or Butt.

swamiji is the only way to address a Hindu priest.
