I think it is way dumb. In the long run they probably well regret it. its true the PS3 does need to focus on the PS3 games, but thats the problem there are only a handful of ps3 games that are worth it. So why not let people buy a couple of cheap PS2 games (that are still coming out).
It is Correct that things drop in the price. But usually the reason things drop in price is they found a cheaper way to make the product (this is probably why it takes nothing to build a Ps2). But Sony didn't do this. They aren't to the point to where they can really cut the costs. So they have to cut features. (on the other had, XBOX 360 came out with better version of the Xbox 360 not cheaper versions).
This isn't a problem for Xbox 360 because they have a library of games, the PS3 doesn't, and thus needs the PS2 game library to keep it going.
For me who had PS1, then Xbox then Xbox 360. I'll probably pick up a PS3, to go back and play all the PS3 and PS2 games I missed out on. Why would I jump ship now? The price well keep going down until next Christmas, and by then PS3 just might (if there are no more delays) have some games.

Sorry, WHY?
They've cut the price (what people have been moaning like f**k about), and brought out a cheaper model to go along side it.
Some people want the moon on a stick!

They haven't downgraded the console. The 40GB has some features cut back, but the PS3 part is the same in all the different types.

Actually, I disagree. Most products do decrease in price over time, but the trade off is usually a loss of less popular functionality. Consider the VHS player. Early in the market, the devices had three record modes for 2, 4, or 6 hour recording and all three modes supported stereo hi-fi playback. Then the 4 hour mode lost hi-fi playback, then the mode went away all together.

Used to be that computers had floppy drives to support reinstalling the operating systems, but that bit of functionality is gone the way of the do-do.

Why ? What they did was a good thing...

Its not as if Xbox 360 didn't do the same thing with the 360 Elite (the Black one)...

some people don't care about it being backwards compatible; they buy a PS3 because they want to play Ps3 games... not Ps2 games... so it saves em a $100 if they knock out a feature they wouldn't use...

Dominic, have you ever bought any electronic equipment that actually went UP IN PRICE after you bought it??

ALL ELECTRONICS DROP IN PRICE as time passes everybody knows that. (i.e. the I-PHONE)

I bought my 60GB for $599 too, but I'm not complaining since I bought it KNOWING that it would eventually drop in price.

As far as the original question goes.... NO... that doesn't make want to say FU SONY... all SONY is doing is making the PS3 more affordable which means MORE people will buy them, which means MORE potential gamers, which means MORE games will be developed, which means MORE fun games for ALL of us.

I think you need to look at the big picture instead of the extra $100 or $200 we had to dish out when the PS3 first came out.

not really. Anyone who own a PS3 probably has a PS2 so they can just play it on the PS2.Plus the price dropped, is that a bad thing?

I think Sony is doing a good enough job of F'ing themselves, without needing any help or encouragement from anyone else...
