I do agree that Immigrants that wish to work in the US should learn the language . Although it might be difficult at first...how are you or anyone else supposed to know when these people immigrated? When you are an older person it is harder to learn a new language....not impossible.
My belief , no matter how wishfull it may be . Is that any HUMAN being should be allowed to live on any piece of land as they wish. Especially if they are having a hard time making a living in the country they live in now.
I was born in Mexico and i came legally to the US when i was 2 years old , i am now 21 years old and i am married to a us citizen. i don't know much about mexico or how difficult it is to live there...thats why i wouldn't want to go back because i grew up in the US. However I am proud of my roots, i love being of Mexican decent.
well anywho have a nice day

Benjaben, I DO know that most Mexicans do not try to learn English. I am a teacher and I can't tell you how many parent teacher conferences I have had with Mexican parents who have been here 10 YEARS or more and need the district to pay for an interpreter because they never bothered to learn English.
Besides them, they are doing SUCH a huge disservice to their kids, because in San Diego County where many classes are taught in Spanish, even Mexican kids born in the U.S.A. STILL don't speak English!!! I've subbed a lot and I remember asking 3rd graders (in my limited Spanish) "Where were you born?" and one said "Denver." Others all cited towns in Southern Calif. These kids were 8 years old and could not compose a sentence in English. It puts them at least 3 years behind the English speaking kids and few ever catch up. Parents who don't learn and teach their kids English should be cited for child abuse because they are ruining their kids' futures.

I once read a joke about languages...
What do you call a person that speaks 3 languages?
Trilingual
What do you call a person that speaks 2 languages?
Bilingual
What do you call a person that only speaks one language?
American
I've been to alot of places around the world, and English is everywhere. (or at least much more than foreign languages are in the US) It is much easier to travel as an American, because English is the favored second language. I read once that there are more people studying English in China than there are people in the US.
My point is even though I agree with you, and I even was angered when I heard something about a debate over having the Star spangled banner in Spanish...(f-ing ridiculous National anthem-national language period), I do think that more Americans should learn a foreign language. 2 years of Spanish class in high school doesn't really cut it.
Also would say that alot of people stirring up problems with immigration rights and such are the ugly minority so to speak. There are many immigrants doing it the right way, the legal way, and are grateful for their opportunity to do so. They should learn English, and we should learn Spanish. (or German or Japanese- whatever)

I agree... it's nice to help them along in their own language, but it's getting rather ridiculous.
I called to get help on my phone or something and the first language that popped up was Spanish and then an English voice appeared to ask if I wanted the instructions in English... and I was thinking, "This is an American country! Spanish should be the option, English should be the main.."
We have the same problem in Hawaii...except instead of Mexicans theyre Micronesians. They go to our public schools and cause trouble and fail and they don't even bother to learn our language. All the other immigrants at least put in the effort to learn. sigh.
oh well.

I agree, I live in the Houston area and it's incredible how many people won't take the time to learn to speak English, they expect you to learn THEIR language.
I don't have a problem w/ learning Spanish, I think it makes me a better person, but why is it wrong to expect them to do the same?
Benjaben, that is totally incorrect. Illegals are not taking jobs nobody wants, they are taking jobs no one will do at the wages they do them at. They are suppressing wages. If employers payed a real wage for many of those jobs, plenty of Americans would do them.
Cowgirl, you are just a s wrong as Benjaben (who pulled his answer). They ARE taking jobs away because they suppress the normal wages and keep them where a self respecting American won't work for that little. And if i HAD to go to another country I WOULD learn to speak their language. It is a matter of respect, if I or anyone is going to live off of another countries well being, then it is only right to learn their language. Just as I expect Hispanic immigrants to do.

Because our ignorant government has catered to them. GW wants Mexico's oil and he'll do anything to get it. I do know Spanish but I feel that anyone in the USA should learn English, however, maybe these illegals are too stupid to learn our language. If so, we surely don't need anything they have to offer. Replace these illegals with convict labor,we have plenty of them and prison is not a 5 star hotel. Make them work to earn their rights back. Deport all illegal aliens now!

Because in America we have a system of entitlement that started after the civil rights movement. We now have an attitude that is such if you are anything but white you cannot be touched. So todays baby boomer politician who still feels bad about the 60's and 70's won't do anything about illegal immigration because the illegals groups who lobby congress all spout racism.
Therefore they don't have a need to speak English if they get free health care in the emergency rooms (that taxpayers pay for by the way) and food stamps and social security and free education with spanish translators for the kids, and on and on and on, they don't pay federal taxes because they are paid under the table and all the while your taxes will go up

I've lived in Europe for several years in addition to all my travels there and around the world. I've always made a point of learning as much of the local language as possible. The number one complaint I've heard from locals in all the counties I've been to is that people come to visit/live there and expect the locals to understand and speak their language. Not the other way around. Yep, they need to learn English and it should be a requirement.

Many people do try to speak English and it doesn't matter if they can or can't they feel that they are to better off asking someone to speak their own language this way they make sure that what they are saying will get across just like if they were speaking in English.
People from other cultures especially the USA just don't seem to udnerstand what all it takes to come here to this Nation. You can't walk the walk when you haven't been in those shoes.
Think about this: what if you HAD to leave a wife and kids and parents to go to another country not because you wanted too but because you HAD TOO> What would you do if your family was barely living, barely surviving, barely eating> you can't and have no right to judge, to say, do anything against any one, anyone.
I get so tired of hearing ignorant people say, "They are taking our jobs away" < "They are living off the system" "They don't pay taxes" ???????
1st. they don't take anything from anyone who isn't wanting to work for the cheap and hard pay.
2nd. they can't live off the system when they don't have a Social.
3. how would you like it if for all your lifetime you worked here and never saw your income tax? Well rude awaking, they don't! They can't unless they become a resident and that can't happen if they don't have a son/daughter or sibiling that can help them submit those papers for them, but they still have to come up with hundreds of dollars too.

I trust Jacqueline. If you may have a favourite eating place, ask them. Even if they do not put it up for sale they may be able to on the whole placed anything in combination for that sized social gathering. Don't provide your cash to those company chains, aid those privately operated areas. They will placed a lot more attempt into assuring that you've got a well revel in.
