The main thing is that you want the antenna polarization of the transmitting station to be the same as the receiving station. If the other stations are vertically polarized, you want to be vertically polarized too. Match polarization with whatever stations you're communicating with.

In a nut shell, most man made interference is vertically polarized. So with that being said, Horizontally polarized is a little less susceptible to that type interference. other than that, now days it doesn't make a much difference in the communication bands
