Because the idea is scary and different--you know somethings bad if it's scary and different. That's the only reason that I could come up with!

Can't help you. And why would people call you homophobic, if you are for gay marriage?
There are no reasons, the only thing religious people come up with is that marriage is a union blessed by god, but the term "marriage" is actually never used in the bible.
Why they think they own the word "marriage" is beyond me.
Civil marriages have existed outside the church for decades, their marriages are as valid as any other. The government has never dictated to churches who they have to marry, and allowing civil gay marriages won't change what they can or cannot do in a church, as the clergy sees fit.
So their is truly no argument against civil gay marriages, whatsoever. It is all fear mongering.

The real issue boils down to what marriage actually is and has been for generations.
From both the historical and Biblical perspective, it has always been the civil union of a man and a woman. Various cultures assigned certain legal rights to the "entity" created by marriage, and rights of survivors when said marriage ended through death or other means.
From a strictly Biblical perspective, it has always been the union of a man and a woman, and any other "union" was considered an abomination in the eyes of God.

Debate...I love representing the other side. It's fun. Can you take a religious stance? Then go nuts with all the OT anti-gay hatred. You can also use the ridiculous reasoning that we are only made to procreate and gay sex doesn't accomplish that.
And it's icky (not my opinion, but that is more of a truth to homophobes than anything else they come up with).

The only reason would be the proposition that marriage is a religious ceremony and the religion should be able to control the necessary requirements. This, however, does nothing to obviate the fact that a civil ceremony conferring all civil rights (inheritance, tax breaks, etc...) should be open to all.

You can use the whole sex is for procreation angle and since you need a male and female to make a baby, 2 people of the same gender should not have sex or get married.

Gay marriage is pretty gay, but if people love each other, they should be allowed to get married. As long as I don't have to watch.

I think all marriage should be banned.
It is legalized murder.
2 people go into a room and only one walks out.
