Thousands of years ago (when the old testament was first written), people believed that the earth was flat and that lightning and thunder was God getting angry. We now know better. Yet why do people refuse to accept that religion is the same way: all the miracles written about in the bible were probably works of nature or science, but because they didn't know any better, they described them as miracles.
Why do people believe in the bible so deeply, knowing how much has changed in science in the past 5-6 thousand years? (since the old testament) Why do people believe, knowing that the bible was written by MAN (who, by definition, is imperfect) and passed along through word of mouth? It's like the game "telephone"...so much could have been lost in translation.

My point exactly! Who said that the men writing it were inspired by God? The men writing it!!! So if I say that something I write is inspired by Santa Claus, will you all believe in Santa Claus, too?

Alas, you are talking to a lot of sheep in men's clothing. They shut their mind to these things. In medieval times science was considered witchcraft and was punishable by being burned at the stake because Science proved that much of what the church said was by God's will could be explained away by research. Same with those who used herbs to heal, and KNEW what was going to happen before it did. They were all called Devil worshipers or Witch because their abilities threatened the church's hold on the people and their purse strings. It is still that way! People use the Devil as an excuse to put others down without doing research. Too bad because it is this mentality which is allowing people to trample our rights and freedom! Good luck in getting people to see this, they will just argue with you saying you have no belief in God and will go to Hell! And for the record, I don't hate religion nor am I an Atheist. I have been studying religions for over 20 years now!

The Bible was once now not loosely translated or copied because the guys who did so believed it was once God's phrase and took their paintings very critically. The historic Hebrew scribes even counted and saved monitor of the quantity of letters within the historical testomony (815,a hundred and forty) so that they would assess for mistakes. The knew the center letter of the primary 5 books of the Bible and this was once used a checking software to enure that there have been no errors. Such painstaking care went a protracted option to maintain correct copies of the Bible. The Dead Sea scrolls learned over fifty years in the past show the accuracy of copying over many centuries. These are only a few reasongs for taking the Bible critically.

Well lets see.... the Bible was written in three different languages and on two different continents, made hundreds of prophecies that were written hundred of years previously and came to pass almost word for word as was predicted. The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered hundreds of years after the Bible was written and was word for word with what was written in the Bible. The Bible is the most historically accurate book ever written( archeology has found documents from many different civilizations that concur with what is written in the Bible). There is no possible way that the Bible could have been written by men, unless God told them what to write.
As for it just being "science", what about all the prophecies in the Bible? what about when Elijah prayed and fire came from heaven? I'm sorry but there is no way the Bible is made up.

Evolution was written by men and you believe it!
I believe in the Bible because there is evidence that its pages were inspired by God.
You claim that thousands of years ago people believed the earth was flat. The fact is that if scientists had read the Bible, they would have seen:
-The earth is suspended over nothing(Job26:7)
-He sits above the 'circle' of the earth(Isaiah40:22)-not flat
-Establish a weight for the wind.(Job28:24,25)Scientific community confirmed the air has weight.
Science proves you can trust the Bible.
*The Bible was written in 3 continents over a 1,500 year span. Written by 40 people, all inspired by one person, God.
The Bible is not an ordinary book. It has the power to transform lives.

The respirator is designed by man and yet man may depend on the respirator to remain alive. The fact that God inspired men to write the Bible does not diminish the authority of the Bible. The Bible never said in any of its almost 32,000 verses that the earth is flat or that thunder and lightening are expressions of God's anger - these were assumptions of early 'science'. Please study the Bible before criticising the Bible; don't depend on what you may hear from others whose main aim is to tell lies against the Bible. Miracles? well, legs that were deformed due to polio, have been known to instantaneously become normal after prayers at crusades held by Deeper Life Bible Church.

Religion serves two main purposes. To bring about a kind of hope that there is a guiding power (God) that loves you and wants what's best for you. I helps put people at ease. Second is to explain what happens after death. It seems to give a sense or purpose to this life beyond just living this life. Because so many people want these needs fulfilled religion has a very strong following. The church doesn't know how to update the bible without pissing the followers off. So instead of trying they change the sermons instead and try to play it off as this was the meanings the whole time.

Welcome to my eternal question.
I've often asked and I've actually gotten quite a few answers, I have asked Christians and other religions in both reality and the computer.
I've asked "If I went back into time, got rid of the Bible before it was ever heard of and wrote Star Wars and said God told me to write it, would you believe and worship it today?"
A few of them actually said "Yes".
See a connection anywhere?
So, I'm assuming just because we uncovered a book which could quite possibly be a fairytale from the ancients, that we have to worship a book.
No offense intended, but I like to keep an open opinion, "God" has always said, do not judge.
I'm not judging, that "God" is a Male or Woman, or even existent, I do however believe there is a higher power than us, I just don't exactly know what it is.

Actually, genius, people from the Bible knew the earth was not only round, but that it hung in space...they knew things they couldn't have possibly known at the time. Why is it that atheists hang out on the religious question and answer part of this site, then complain about having to deal with religion in schools, public, etc? If you hate religion so bad, go to a different area. At least do a little research before you speak - maybe pick up a Bible first so you don't make yourself look so ridiculous for those of us who do know the Bible.

For the above answers, if the men who wrote it were inspired by god, does that mean the Catholics who decided what books would be in the NT were inspired by God too?

It's one of those things that you know from your parents, who know it from theirs, who know it from theirs and so on. For some people it is nothing but indoctrination, they would have became terrorists if they were born in iraq, cause they don't ask questions and doubt what they are told. But there are people who lived certain events in their lifes, that made them feel there's a god. And if there's a god, you usually embrace the religion you were born to.
