A widescreen TV has aspect ratio of 16:9. Theatrical movies have been made in a variety of ratios. Films that are exceptionally wide have to either be cut down to show the center portion only, or use the bars. The movie studio makes the decision how to distribute the DVD version. A widescreen DVD means that the program content is designed to fit on a 16:9 display as opposed to the old fashioned 4:3 TV set size.
