I'm not sure if visa is okay. Please help. I heard the new rule coming out in October that you need to have a passport to go anywhere outside US.

A green card is no use for any international travel purpose, although he should still take this with him as it will serve as proof of residency in the United States for re-entry into the country.

You will both need valid passports and visas.

He can apply for a passport at his countries Embassy, High Commission or Consulate in the United States.

To apply for a visa to Vietnam, click the link to VN Embassy provided below.

The persons who wrote that there is no new rule and that travel outside the U.S. always required a passport are not entirely correct.

Passports were always required for travel between the U.S. and Vietnam (in either direction).

The new rule relates to travel within the Western hemisphere. It used to be possible for U.S. citizens to travel to Canada, Mexico, and certain other countries, and return, without a passport. The new rule expands the passport requirement (which always applied to Vietnam) to apply to all countries, including those that were previously exempt.

He will need a passport to leave and return AND he will need a visa to enter Vietnam. You can get that at the Vietnamese embassy. You will have to apply to the state department (or equivalent) of which he is a citizen for a passport. In the US, it takes months.

He needs a passport from his country of origin's embassy. Tell him to apply now!!! Visa is also required.

Passports were always required if you traveled outside of the U.S. It's not a new rule.

I don't know about the passport but if I only had a green card I would not leave the USA until I became a citizen. There are to many things that could happen in a third world country or any country and not to be a USA citizen could be unsettling, once you leave the USA all your right go back to the country you were born in.

If your husband is stateless (i.e., he has no citizenship in Vietnam or anywhere else in the world), he needs to apply for a re-entry permit and get a visa to Vietnam. The re-entry permit will allow him to return to the U.S. Make sure that you file an expedited application, since receiving a re-entry permit can take months, if you file the conventional way.

Any US Embassy can replace your green card. Your son's green card is linked to yours in the database so as long as your cards are still active they'll be able to replace them. You won't be able to take your son out of India without the father's consent so go for sole custody when you file for divorce. Once your controlling spouse is out of the picture you'll be able to travel freely with your son. I'm sorry you married into such an emotionally abusive situation.
