I got them out earlier today and I'm not sure what I can eat. I've had a bit of jelly and ice cream but is mashed potatoes ok as well as long as they are very soft and mashed up well?

Mashed potatoes is a good thing to have after extractions... and so are jello (not the red kind), ice cream, pudding, etc... anything soft. You want to stay away from 'hard' and spicy foods.

You also shouldn't drink from a straw, smoke, drink anything carbonated, rinse or spit for the first 24 hours to ensure the clot stays in place.

Best of luck to you!

Mashed potatoes are fine. You'll want something besides sugar! Try some soup, but don't use a straw!

As another poster indicated, don't use a straw or smoke for several days. Why?

When your wisdom teeth are extracted, a clot forms over the socket to protect it and keep it moist while it heals. The suction from smoking and using a straw (and even from vigorous rinsing) may dislodge the clot, causing a painful "dry socket" and slowing the healing process. Sometimes "dry socket" occurs anyway; the surgeon may prescribe pain medication and may packet the empty socket with medicated gauze.

Mashed potato is fine. Try to stay away from grainy stuff like rice though. It can get caught up in the extracted area. Also rinse with warm water and salt to help with the healing

Pretty much any food you can swallow without chewing is okay, including mashed potatoes. Other thoughts - applesauce, oatmeal, jello, pudding, mac and cheese...
