Our family just went through a fire and lost everything. She seems to be having trouble dealing with it and I wanted to know if she is too young to go to counceling. I didnt think so but my husband seems to think that she wouldnt understand enough. I want to give her some time but if she continues to have trouble with it and keeps talking about it then I want to possibly take her to talk with someone. Any info would be appreciated!!

Thanks in advance!!

Not too young....she can get help through art therapy or play therapy. Either case it would be directed for a 3 year old to be able to express their feelings.....ALSO you may find it helpful to see someone so they can give you ideas on parenting. I dont mean that you dont know how to parent...I mean that they may be able to give you pointers on how to address some of her issues regarding the fire. good luck.

Counselling can be done with a child at age 3. She probably just needs a good way to express how she is feeling and to find a way to deal with the trauma of the fire. The psychologist will help her to do this through things like play or art therapy.

Right now you would be better off to talk with her then a stranger.

After things like that when you are so young, it is upsetting to be isolated with a strange person. I think it would make things worse right now to go through that. This may be a good time for some form of group therapy. With your family or with other children that have gotten over a fire.

Just be careful you don't get idiots like I did. If you get idiots they may pair her up with people that start the fires instead of people who surived a fire. (Not exactly what happened to me, but the equivilant of).

i work at a mental health clinic and we have a rule not to start counseling with anyone under the age of 4 years old. but there are some that are out there would will deal with younger children in a family setting, you just have to find someone who will be willing to work w/ you and your families issues. best of luck, and im sorry about your loss ♥
