Tablets are made with shape and size best suitable for swallowing.A shape without corners would be easier to swallow.

Originally, all tablets were made with circular (disk) shape only but with different colors. Such shape was proven as excellent causing no problem in swallowing. Passage in the gastrointestinal tract along with peristalsis is also facilitated by such shape.

That could be the reason that there are more circular tablets shapes until now. Some other modified shapes had been made later but in just less number- most of them remain without corners like oblong shape.

Actually, most tablets are circular because this is the easiest shape to cut in a pill extrusion machine. The medication and filler are extruded out of an opening, and a blade slices off a bit of it at regular intervals. Corners on an extrusion machine would tend to cause cracks and crumbles in the pills.

Nowadays, most pills are made in a pill press die machine--compound is poured into a die, and a hydraulic press compresses it into the tablet. With this, pills can pretty much be made in any shape, but most are still made round for traditional reasons.

While non-round pills may seem more difficult to swallow, this is actually not that much of an issue, and many non-generic tablets are made in unusual shapes for brand recognition (Lamictal comes to mind).
