I really like math and science so I figured being a chem. eng. is perfect! But what exactly does that entail? What can you do with a degree in chem. eng. and what exactly is it?

A degree in chemical engineering is a four or five year college degree (depending on the college, and whether they require internships). They study chemical synthesis, chemical properties of substances, process engineering (how to make something in the most efficient manner in the fewest steps), and material properties. All engineers also take physics, math and basic circuits and mechanics.

You can get a job with a pharmaceutical company as a chemical engineer. You can also work for the food industry ( a friend of mine works for Heinz) or the plastics industry, or oil refinement, or environmental waste, or nanotechnology. There are many opportunities for chemical engineers, and demand (and salary) is high.

A chemical Engineering degree is a very versatile degree. If you love chemistry, then you will love ChemE.

I have worked with numerous ChemE's that became environmental consultants.
