What if I didn't actually believe in a higher power that places any value on human life or suffering?

Would I be better off in my own life if I went ahead and forced myself to believe that there was?

I watched this thing on Stalin and the Soviet Empire on the History Channel last night. That's what inspired this question.

What matters in your life is not what any other power values, but whether or not you place any value on human life or suffering.

You should talk to people who believe in a higher power and get more of a sense that the universe does have a wonderful oneness quality to it. One sometimes has to have a taste from others, what can be gained by believing, and then use the power of meditation or prayer to test what can come from such a belief. A lot of people in crisis have survived because they had faith and practiced it. Human suffering is part of life, and can give one empathy torward others which is a good quality. Life is tough, But you can go forth and challenge the tough side of life and its pain. And by so doing become someone that can use the strength gained to understand and help others. The good feelings gained by so doing, will make all pain worthwhile.

You could never force yourself to belief anything. You either believe or you do not.

You may attempt to convince yourself with some weak arguments, but that wouldn't be able to hold you for long. The first person who comes along and disagrees with you, will send you toppling right back over.

If you cannot believe in invisible beings, then don't. It won't hurt you in anyway.
